Hex Kit: Desktop App

Hex Kit is a desktop application for building hex maps to be used with table top role playing games. Rather than being bogged down by complicated functions, Hex Kit is built to be intuitive and quick to use with an emphasis on art.

Features:

  • Multi Platform: Hex Kit runs native on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
  • Simple to Use: It has just the right tools you need to quickly put together a detailed map, as well as a few tools for displaying your map at the table.
  • Detail Variation: No need to hand pick each tile as you build your map; pick a hex style and the software randomizes the selection as you click and drag across the canvas. Tiles can be rotated and flipped with just a few mouse clicks as well. If you find the painting too broad, you can also select individual tiles.
  • Player Facing Display: Hex Kit has a display mode that shows your map in a separate window; drag it to a second screen or show it on a projector. You can hide parts of the map with fog of war and reveal the map as needed. Changes made in paint mode update in the display window in real time. Did your players burn that village down? Delete it from the map, and it's gone.
  • Store Information: You can store a label with a description for each hex directly in the map.
  • Custom Tiles: Hex Kit comes with a small selection of old school themed, black & white tiles that you can use to get started. You can create and import your own tiles, purchase and install official tile sets illustrated by CONE team members, install tile sets from 3rd parties, or even cobble together tiles made from images found around the internet!
  • Export: Hex Kit will export your map as a PNG file that you can print or even use with a virtual table top.
  • Random Maps: If you're in a hurry, or just want to goof off, you can generate a random map and then edit it to fit your needs. You can even save your generator to use again later.
  • Internal API / Plugin Support: Hex Kit boasts in interal API; users willing to dig in to a little bit of JavaScript can create, run, and share plugins to get an extra mile out of Hex Kit.
  • Support For Both Orientations: Hex Kit now supports tiles that either have points up or faces up.
More Tiles: Hex Kit comes packed with classic, black & white tiles out of the box. Additional, full color hand illustrated tiles can be purchased downloaded here in our DTRPG store.

Installation: Installing Hex Kit is easy: download the zip file or dmg and extract it wherever you want. All you have to do is open the executable and you'll be making maps in no time. When updating to a new version of Hex Kit, simply download the new version and override the old one.

Terms of Use: By purchasing or downloading Hex Kit you agree to utilize Hex Kit art assets for personal use only unless given permission from Cone Of Negative Energy by means of a commercial license agreement. The Hex Kit software and all official Hex Kit art assets are copyright 2017 Cone Of Negative Energy. Full and expanded legal terms included with download. For tutorials and more information, visit hex-kit dot com.

NOTE: The Hex Kit desktop application only comes with black and white tiles; full color tiles are additional purchases. This version of the Hex Kit desktop app is the exact same version available in other marketplaces.

Is there a maximum number of hexes you can place? Like if I wanted to make some absurdly large area for a space game, whats the largest X by Y I can create of hexes?

it's limited only by your computer specs; a more powerful PC is gunna be able to make bigger maps. in general, 60x60 with 3 layers should run like a charm on a modern machine. some people report much much bigger maps though.

That sounds great. I'd love to make a really large map to output to a map/poster printer I've got access to. Glad to know there isn't really a limit.

You might be able to get it working on a chrome book; it's built on Chrome tech but as for now we have no plan to explore mobile ready versions.

I'm having a glitch where the default tiles aren't loaded, and the dialogue to import tiles is blank. Windows 10. Have tried on two computers.

Double check and make sure you extracted the application folder from the zip file, and aren't trying to run it from inside the zip file. If you're still having an issue, please email me cecil at swordpeddler dot com

Thanks for the tip! I was able to make it work by running the software from a USB drive and it runs great. Seems to be a permissions issue with my computer.

I'm also getting this problem - I downloaded for an Windows 7 64 bit machine, extracted the 'HexKitWindows64v203' file, and run the 'Hex Kit' application from within the resulting folder.

I get the toolbox and map windows with a blank square in the latter, with no hex grid, and no tiles available. Generating a new map does nothing.

I really do not want to have to run it from a usb stick.

Hi tony! We haven't been able to replicate this bug so I can't say for sure that this is a problem on our end yet, but it's possible! Double check that all files have made it out of the zip, and if you need to try to use the native Windows extractor instead of a a 3rd party tool and vice versa. Email me if it still gives you guff. cecil at sword peddler dot com.

Ok. Tried unzipping to a flash drive. Running directly from that, worked.

Tried copying the extracted file structure back to the PC hard drive, retaining the original name and structure. Seems to have cleared the problem.

Thanks, TonyH

My tiles look great, but whenever I try to rotate them they come out off-center. Any tips on this???
Customer avatar
cecil H May 22, 2018 12:35 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
It depends on which tileset you're using. If you're playing with the Pixel Tileset and they are off center, it's because those tiles are not meant to be rotated; those tiles are formatted to connect at corners without rotating to make up for having three-dimensional elements and features that "hang off" of the tiles.

If you're using one of the official tile sets and this is happening, it might be because something was toyed with on import when it didn't need to be. Send me a screenshot of your problem to cecil@swordpeddler.com

Hi there,

I purchased Hexkit on itch.io and was wondering if there is any way that I may obtain a copy from rpgnow? Not a huge deal but it would be nice to have it available from the same place as all of my other gaming goodies.

Thanks!

Hi Cecil!
I have a quick question for you; I've noticed (on 2 different computers, different OS's) that when I try to 'Import' a map, I can see the layers and whatnot in my toolbox, but the entire screen comes up blank.

I've also noticed that when the above issue occurs, if I press Ctrl+G (to Generate a new map) the 'Generate' window comes up with no buttons on it, it's just a blank form.

Any details on how to fix this?
Thanks!

Hi Connor,

If you load your tilesets are in different folders when you try to load a map on a different computer, then it will give you a blank map and bug out the generate function. If you plan to move maps from one computer to another from time to time, I recommend having your tilesets in the main hex kit folder on all devices.

Dear Folks interested in a commercial-use license:

The software itself is free to use commercially without paying any extra cash or trading your soul for the good times. The official Hex Kit tilesets do require a license, though. you can email me with questions: cecil @ swordpeddler . com (remove the spaces, unless you want to send me spam, then keep the spaces)

Love,
Cecil

No, it doesn't. (I checked directly with them during the kickstarter campaign.) I'm hoping that they put out a reasonably priced commercial license, because the hexes are really beautiful.

I think this "contact us" approach is unfortunate, given how many homebrew RPG products get created for sale, but not for any significant profit. I encourage you to create a drive-by licensing scheme where people creating adventures to sell for 2$ or drive thru rpg can create hex maps using your software with terms they can see right away and decide to take on.

Suggestions might be:
* Drive-by license might be limited to "profits under x"
* Limit to assembled image, not individual tiles
* Maybe limit to B/W tileset
* Put SKU on itch.io

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
