Revised and enhanced edition live at Kickstarter now!

B/X Essentials is rebranding as Old-School Essentials, to be debuted as a boxed set and all-in-one hardcover.

The B/X Essentials line is a restatement of the classic Basic/Expert fantasy adventure gaming rule set, given a fresh, new presentation focused on usability:

  • Basic and Expert rules seamlessly combined.
  • Streamlined presentation optimised for ease of reference during play.
  • Meticulously researched; a guaranteed 100% accurate rendition of the classic rules of yesteryear.
  • Carefully clarified, ironing out ambiguities in the original rules.

This second book lays out the standard classes of adventurer and the ways in which characters can spend their hard-earned treasure, including: arms, adventuring gear, mounts, sea vessels, mercenaries, specialists, and (eventually!) castles and strongholds.

About the print editions: There are two different print editions, both 6" x 9":

1. The premium edition. This is staple bound, so it lays flat at the table, and is produced with the premium printing process, which gives crisper text and images.

2. The standard, perfect bound edition.

A plain text edition of this book is available here. This is provided as an aid to others who wish to create their own house rules documents or retro-clones (please read the Open Game License, at the end of the document, carefully!).

I like this item. Was expecting more gear (don't know why) but I was.
You should also make an 8½x11 version of this line (with 3-hole punch room)

Hi Rachael, glad you like the book! Yeah, the Basic/Expert lists of adventuring gear are actually pretty minimal, compared to AD&D or later editions. (Of course, in the interests of accuracy, I've not added or removed anything from these lists.)

Haha, yes an 8½x11 would also be fun. Honestly, though, it's unlikely to happen. It'd be a huge effort to redo the layout of the books for a different format.

I'll redo the layout, where do I send you a copy.

Thats a great idea. It would be handy to put in a binder.

Are you going to come out with a spells and a monsters version of this series?
Customer avatar
Gavin N December 18, 2017 6:58 am UTC
Hi Louis, yes the series will form a complete game.

The third book -- Cleric and Magic-User Spells -- is currently being illustrated. It should be published in February. Following that, I have two more books planned: 4: Monsters, 5: Adventures and Treasures.

Yes I bought the pdf also, not caring about a discount. As soon as the POD version is ready I’ll be buying six copies for my B/X game and two more copies of the first book so everyone will have a copy. Aaron D

Hi Aaron, that's great to hear that you're all enjoying the books and getting so much use out of them! The print editions should be ready to go in the next week, I'm hoping.

Yep! The setup process is under way. There will be a standard perfect bound edition and a premium staple bound edition. I'm hoping they'll be ready to go in the next 10-14 days.

Hi Gavin, I read your advisory about no discount coupons this time round, but its a testament to my impatience and how much I appreciate your work that I chose to buy it anyway, conscious of the fact I'll be buying it again in a couple of weeks :-)

Looking forward to future volumes and the expansion of Dolmenwood.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
