TextJiggler is not only useful, it's FREE! If you have some of the Wintertree fonts such as Nug-Soth or dMixed, it's very useful; if you have the Hieroglyphica pack, it's essential.

TextJiggler is an easy-to-use program that changes text capitalization in many different ways. It can do this randomly, alternately, or in a special form for the Wintertree hieroglyphic fonts Medu and Glyphic. The user merely enters the text, selectes the desired capitalization and options, and clicks the "Jiggle" button.

One useful feature is hieroglyphic capitalization. For exaple, consider the following line of hieroglyphic text from Wintertree's Medu font (shortened to fit the DriveThruRPG graphics width requirements):

unJiggled Medu

The ancient Egyptians wanted their hieroglyphic writing to be artistic as well as informative. One way they did this was by stacking short characters to balance the usage of space. Most hieroglyphic fonts can't do that, but Wintertree's hieroglyphic fonts Medu and Glyphic are unique in that they can. Stacking short characters isn't difficult to do manually -- merely enter the line in all-caps, then switch the first of every pair of short characters to lowercase, and add nulls (< and >) after unpaired ones. It does, however, get tedious for messages longer than a few words. Here's what the line above looks like with stacking:

Jiggled Medu
Setting that up -- or an entire page of text -- is as easy as entering it in TextJiggler, selecting hieroglyphic capitalization and Medu, and clicking "Jiggle". Then click "Copy", paste it into your word processor, and set the font as desired. Voila, instant properly-stacked hieroglyphs.

Another useful feature of TextJiggler is the random capitalization. Why would you want to capitalize things randomly? Because Wintertree has a number of fonts which have variant characters in upper- and lowercase. Alternating between them allows for a more natural look. For example, here are some dice from dMixed:

unJiggled dMixed dice

Nice enough (not to mentin unique), but don't they look a bit rigid? That font has different dice shapes in upper- and lowercase, plus the lowercase ones are straight and the uppercase ones are angled. With TextJiggler, you can randomly alternate cases to make your dice look more like they were rolled that way. Here it is with the random bias set to favor uppercase:
unJiggled dMixed dice

True, you'll probably want to fine-tune it a bit manually, but TextJiggler at least gives you a good starting place. There are other fonts which also have variants in the cases. For example, here's a block of Nug-Soth Italic in lowercase only:

unJiggled block of NugSoth

It does look handwritten, but it seems a bit stiff. It was clearly written by someone who had plenty of time to do it right. The variant with this one is quite subtle, only a few degrees of change in angle, but it makes a difference in the overall look of a block of type. This looks more like it was written hastily, or perhaps by someone who has seen a few too many things no human can face and stay sane:

Jiggled block of NugSoth
That's much more evocative and interesting for an intercepted secret message, a mad cultist's diary, or many other things that might be useful in a game.

You can also reverse text, which is convenient if you are putting borders around something and need the bottom to be backwards. It can convert text to all uppercase or all lowercase, just for convenience. For those fonts which use some of the punctuation symbols as alternates for the numerals, you can jiggle only those, or both those and the alphabetic characters. Finally, there are some options for removing all spaces, changing them to dashes, etc., which are handy for those fonts in which dash is used as an alternative space, particularly the over/underlined faces in some of the Wintertree fonts.

TextJiggler is currently available for Windows (XP and up); a Macintosh version is in the works. (the Windows version will probably run under emulation, as it is entirely self-contained) It is completely portable software, so you can easily run it off a flash drive.

Fonts used in these examples:

Medu Regular - in the Hieroglyphica historical font package

dMixed Round White - in the dMixed dice font

Nug-Soth Italic - in the Nug-Soth cipher font

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
