BX Advanced

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The BX Advanced Gold Edition rules are based on the 1978 advanced first edition edition of the world’s most popular fantasy roleplaying game with the less complex game systems of the 1981 B/X edition. In other words, this is a modern version of the fantasy roleplaying  game many people played in the 1980s. They started playing with the B/X edition and just added the races, classes, spells, monsters and treasures from the first Advanced edition, instead of using all the more complex rules from the Advanced Edition. All of the first advanced edition fun without all the often complex and fiddly rules.

In BX Advanced, you may play a first edition style assassin, barbarian, bard, cleric,  druid,  fighter,  illusionist, magic-User, monk, paladin, ranger, or thief in an old school game of exploration, treasure-finding, and fast to play combat. While B/X systems are used instead of the more complex first advanced edition rules, many of the limits of B/X have been removed: there are 20+ levels instead of 14; race is separate from class, spells go to 9th level instead of 6th, and there are many more monsters and treasure items than in B/X. Be a hero or a rogue: your decisions determine whether your character will retire rich, rule a kingdom, or die before his time.

This modern version also includes many optional rules: psionics, some of the house rules the author used in the 1970s, and selected ideas from other roleplaying games. While a sample adventure and campaign setting are included, these rules can easily  be used with all of the old adventures designed for B/X or 1e  and the many new adventures published for these games in the last few years – or you can easily create adventures of your own.

Pity it isn't a POD hardcover. I'd buy it for my collection even though it's redundant for me. The text and page formatting is well done.

Print on demand would be a great option to have. Any plans for PoD version?

How is this B/X when race is not class?

It's B/X Advanced, so B/X base with a few ideas thrown in from AD&D 1E that people commonly used - such as more classes, and race separated from class.

Something I discovered in actual play! The ochre jelly has 14 hit dice, which is about ten too many.

Minor things - the hexmap for the sample setting seems to be upside down, judging by the map title and key. And within the body text for the golems, "wood golem" should be italicized to match the others.

Corrected in the latest update! The missing table is still missing, but the reference to it is replaced by a simple formula.

Page 170 - Miscellaneous Magic Items A-B, lists Bag of Transformation and bag of Tricks But they appear to be missing in The Magic Item Description Section. It goes straight from bag of holding to Boat, Folding.

Is this the place to talk about typos in advance of the print edition? Because the green, red, white, and sea dragons are all missing damage values for their natural attacks.

Yes, please report typos -- either here, in email, or in our forum. I'll try again to get those dragon damage values to stay. I've fixed them several times only to have them disappear again (probably due to user error). Once I get them (and a few other typos) fixed, I'll upload a new version of the PDF.

Just got the email about the update. Just downloaded the update and it appears the dragon damages that Christopher mentioned are still missing. It has to be the evil dragons are going in and deleting it after you fix it. I have noted that the Damage for the dragons is in the no art version.

The dragon damages are there in my original copy of the file I uploaded today. Perhaps the file did not get updated here correctly and the old file is still being downloaded? What is the date at the bottom of the second page (the line above the copyright notice)? It should be February 7, 2018.

Will the Adamantine edition contain the entirety of the Gold edition as well as other options, or options in place of some of the material in Gold?

Yes, a future print option for this Gold (and the future Adamantine) Edition of BX Advanced is planned. I don't want to give a time frame as this will be my first attempt to do a print version -- and I'm know I'm horrible at Indesign.

Randall, I'm interested in this, but what are going to be the differences between this and the gold and adamantine editions? I don't want to buy this only to later realize I should have waited for one of those versions. Thanks.

This is the "Gold Edition". The Adamantine Edition will add a great deal of new material that was not in B/X or 1e. Rules for mutations, technology, more classes, more monsters, more spells, more treasure, more optional rules. The Golden Edition is for people who want to play 1e type games B/X style. The Adamantine Edition will be for those who want this and lots of options and gonzo stuff like some campaigns (like mine) had back in the day. The Adamantine Edition will not be for everyone. But there will likely be a free version (no art) of it as well so people can see it and find out if it is something then want or want to use as firestarter. :)

This quiestion is harder to answer than it sounds. The Gold Edition is 1e with the BX rules. This edition wasn't supposed to exist, but people literally begged for the option of not having all the extra stuff I was describing for BX Advanced. The Adamantine Edition will be what I originally talked about when I proposed BX Advanced, 1e plus a lot of extra stuff with major rules systems based on the B/X rules. It will not simply be this Gold Edition plus the extra stuff, however. For example, the Hit Point/Body Point rules that are optional in the Gold edition will be standard in the Adamantine edition because they make handling tech weapons easier. The XP advancement system will built around the optional in the Gold Edition Experience Rank system as that makes things like mutations easy to factor into advancement. There will likely be a free version of the Adamantine edition as well so you don't have to spend money to see if you like it.

do you plan on releasing the extra (or really, any extra) races/classes/monsters as supplements for B/X Gold? If not, it's not like it wouldn't be fairly easy to mod your own in (which is my way of saying I'll be getting the print edition either way, hah) but it would be an awesome extra thing to have.

B/X Advanced Gold, as you've written it, is a pretty unique-ish system so there's surely some market for "official" expansions and additions to it. You know, in case you don't mind some extra writing and also like money.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
