Miskatonic Repository Anime-Punk

The brightest light casts the darkest shadow.”

Jess C Scott: The Darker Side of Life

Whether you like your anime with demons and supernatural elements or just straight up modern dystopia in your Cyberpunk games, it’s likely that Call of Cthulhu can help you hit that sweet spot.

Perhaps the easiest way to answer what is Anime-Punk is to say what it is not. If you envisage your character as a heavily chromed street samurai gunning down all opposition while they carry out their latest heist, this probably isn’t for you. If however, you prefer your games with a little more plot than gunplay, a little more Ghost in the Shell than Duke Nuke’em perhaps, then Anime-punk might be to your taste.

Inside here, you will find the bare bones of a world for you to expand on. I try to give you a flavor of the background without tying you into a meta-plot. If you don’t like my take on Deep Ones in the 21st century, you can ignore it in favor of inserting your own version and the game will not suffer.

So what is in here? I present a Neo Far East of the near future, ruled by corporations where even career criminals are less ruthless than big business. A world where special police units try to keep a lid on the chaos beneath the surface of society while simmering resentment amongst the populace results in crimes both big and small.

But don’t think this world is without its Cthulhu roots. True, my version of the Dreamlands is accessible to anyone with the right software and some of the monsters have discovered that man learns quickly and has the potential to be a far greater monster than they but it is still a world where the King in Yellow looks down and laughs and where Nyarlathotep still leads people to madness and the expanded vistas that come with such madness.

NB: I feel like I should apologize for the price but it is fully illustrated with 31 pieces of art , most of it at least quarter page, and over a quarter of those pictures are in full colour and that pushed up my cost. Sorry.

No, it is intended to be Cthulhu set in a futuristic environment. Futuristic but still a horror game. The characters are not intended to be any more capable in the stories than their 1920s equivalents.
There are evil corporations, a few new guns, some robotic enemies, a dangerous VR version of the Internet that is 'leaking' into the real world, but nothing that is going to make the characters more durable or dangerous than their enemies. It is also a setting rather than a collection of new rules. There are a couple of new rules for the VR environment and laser weaponry but nothing for equipping characters with effective military-grade cyber-ware. Think Ghost in the Shell detective stories rather than Cyberpunk 2020 heists.

Does this book contain rules for cybernetics, robotic arms with inbuilt guns. That kind of thing.

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
