Microlite74: Perilous Adventures is a Microlite74 variant originally designed for the author's Wilderlands campaign. This version takes the full rules from Microlite74 Expanded as a base, but trims things back to three character classes (Fighter, Cleric, and Magic-User) from the three original 0e booklets and uses backgrounds and different spell lists (illusion, necromancy, witchcraft, wizardry, clerical and druidry) allow a wide variety of player characters -- without all of the complexity of the additional classes and subclasses added in later versions of 0e. If you like the idea of the original three classes from the white box version of 0e, but would like more complete rules and a few more options for player characters, give this version of Microlite74 a try.

A special edition of Microlite74: Perilous Adventures with donated art was released for RetroRoleplaying Cancer Fund donors in early 2015. The plan was to release a free version (with public domain art) about 12 to 18 months later. As over three years have past, this plan suffered from some large schedule slippage. However, this "pay what you want/free" version of Microlite74: Perilous Adventures is finally available. The rules have been slightly revised for this release and a few additional optional rules have been added.

Why download this game? Microlite74 Perilous Adventuresprovides a look at a different path 0e might have taken. A path that expanded character design options without starting down the road that leads to a huge number of separate classes each with their own rules and other bits and bobs. The entire game -- rules, spell lists, monsters, magic items, etc. -- fits in a 72 page rulebook.

Microlite74 games are trimmed-down miniature versions of the Primary Fantasy SRD rules designed to be quick and easy to play, especially when compared to modern incarnations of the game. The goal of Microlite74 games is to recreate the style and feel of that very first (“0e”) fantasy roleplaying game published back in 1974 without giving up all of the clearer mechanics of modern D20-based versions.

Other versions include Microlite74 Basic, Microlite74 Standard, and Microlite74 Extended. Microlite74 Basic rules are complete but basic: There are only two classes (Fighter, Magic-User, and Cleric). Spells are limited and levels top out at 12 to 14. Microlite74 Standard includes many more classes and spells – all over those included in the original edition and its supplements. Microlite74 Extended includes all the material in the standard version extended with a number of house rules the author used in his 0e campaigns starting in the late 1970s. Microlite74 Companion volumes add even more options.

These rules assume that the GM understands the basic concepts of roleplaying games, but provides information for both the GM and the players on the various “old school” styles of play. Microlite74 games can easily use adventures and material from early editions of the world’s most popular tabletop fantasy roleplaying game or modern clones.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
