The Black Hack Second Edition

AJOUTER A LA LISTE DE SOUHAITS >
Watermarked PDF
$6.00

Black is Back!

New expanded Second Edition rules now include a wealth of extra material and tools for every Black Hack GM. The main rules still only take up 30 pages, but the full edition adds over 90 more pages of NPCs, monsters, dungeons, traps, magic items and much more.

The Black Hack is a super-streamlined roleplaying game that uses the Original 1970s Fantasy Roleplaying Game as a base, and could well be the most straightforward modern OSR compatible clone available. If speed of play and character creation, compatibility, and simple - yet elegant rules are what you yearn for. Look no further!

The Black Hack is a fast playing game and the rules can be picked up in minutes.

Print copies of The Black Hack Second Edition including a boxed set are now available and may be ordered from the Squarehex website.

Hey, just wondering if you've considered offering the 'nipple-less wizard' edition I'd asked about awhile back. It seems like others would like that too. It's not clear that the character isn't wearing a top so really just erasing the nipples is all that's required.

Again, sorry to ask, it's ridiculous, I know, but there are a lot of places (workplace, schools...as described) where--but for those two pesky nips--your product could be used.

Love the system...for anyone considering buying the game, it is well worth it!

Hi everyone! I created this character sheet app that you can use to make your Black Hack 2E characters and manage them.

This is fantastic! I thought about building one too, but now I don't have to. Thanks very much.

This is awesome! Might be too much to ask, but would it be possible to import homebrewed classes/spells?

I want to make sure I'm reading the rules correctly. Since players make attribute tests to attack and defend, does that mean that each monster/NPC is just as easy/difficult to hit (and to avoid being hit by) as any other? Are the hit points and damage dice the only mitigating factor here? It just seems odd that a dragoneffectively has the same armor class as a goblin.

Hi Matt, If you check out p. 31 there is a very important rule called "Powerful Foe". Basically, if the monster/NPC's HD (that is, their level) is higher than the PCs, then you *add* the difference to the PC's roll when making attribute tests, attacking, defending, etc. So if the PC is first level (HD 1) and the dragon is level 8 (HD 8), then the PC would add +7 to his attempt to roll under the relevant stat. Makes quite a difference! So yes, monster level compared to PC level really matters.

Additionally, monsters may have special abilities that further differentiate monsters of the same HD, like Slippery, Stubborn, or Armored. While most special abilities in the sample monsters are more offensive or utility than defensive, see the Hobgoblin Bully, Harlequin Assassin, Giant Elementalist, Giant Chieftain, etc. for other ways different monsters may be harder/easier to harm.

Hey this is real rad! Just want to chime in with some other folks in the discussion and say that a PG version without the topless wizard would be great. I mostly play games with co-workers at the office and a no-nipple version would short circuit some awkward conversations!

Also curious about this. It's not a huge deal but it can be a small annoyance printing the specific pages from the main PDF w/ the associated spellsheets.

You should be able to "print" those pages one at a time, but instead of going to a printer, you just save them as a PDF. I know Windows has the option, can't remember if Mac has a save to PDF option. It may also depend on your PDF viewing program, but this way you'll have 4 separate character sheet PDFs

Hi, I'd like to split the PDF into Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide but it says I need to enter a password to edit the PDF. What would this be?
Customer avatar
Andrew A March 23, 2019 11:50 am UTC
As I said in an above comment, you should be able to save as a PDF when printing, so just "print" the pages you want to make available to players as a new document. Going thru the whole book though, I feel like many things in the GM- only part really should be visible to players, as a fair bit of it seems like basic game mechanics, but to each their own

Are wizards nerfed in 2e? They used to get a save bonus but now they get nothing but spells. Are their spells so much better than prayers? Otherwise clerics are a no-brain superior class?

I think the Wizard spells are more powerful. However, if you think they need a little extra add a house rule in your game.

I'm nearing the end of a Kickstarter for a The Black Hack monster book. It leans towards 2e but should play well enough with 1e too. What do I need to put into the OGL statement for something built on TBH? Thanks in advance.

If you want to check out the KS, search for "The CFQ Vol. 1 -for- The Black Hack QUICKSTARTER".

I noticed that there are unformatted rules for the first edition. They have no art and they really help new players understand the basic rules. Is there anything like that for this edition?

They'll be a $2 PDF that is essentially taken from the first 20 or so pages of the main book. We'll release that (free for Kickstarter backers) as soon as the print version of the short booklet goes to press. I'll also send an email to everyone that has bought the main PDF to let them know when it's out.

Would 'Teratic Tome' be an appropriate monster manual for this framework?

Any other monster manual recommendations for this framework?

I'm pretty sure David has one in the works. I like the Teratic Tome a lot, but you will have to convert it to use in TBH 2e. I am about to launch Quickstarter (low goal Kickstarter) for a conversion of my own 5e monsters into The Black Hack. I've been posting about it in the G+ and Facebook groups if you want to see samples of the page layouts and cover. One of my design goals is that you can print it out on your own booklet and get around shipping prices. They're smallish books, zines really. But I will likely include Paper Minis and VTT Tokens if it funds. I should have it listed on KS in the next 24 hours. I will share the links in the groups I mentioned earlier. :^)

There's a new Update on the Kickstarter page. Estimated delivery date for the hardback books is end of January. The increased print run and the upgrade to stitched binding have pushed it back.

I just got that e-mail yesterday. I am very excited. I'd rather get the physical copy later than anticipated knowing it is being rigorously edited to be just right than to get a half-assed book that was rushed. Very cool, thank you for the response.

I don't under stand what the D6 in AV represent.....or even how it really works. Can someone detail it for me?

Here's a verbose explanation - the system's simple enough when you get it:

The d6s represent the armour's capacity for protecting your character from harm, and your character's ability to do repairs on their armour while adventuring.

When your character wears no armour at all, nothing gets in the way of damage they fail to defend against and that damage reduces your character's current total HP.

When your character does wear armour, its Armour Value provides you with a pool of as many Armour Dice. Think of AV as the armour's max HP and the number of Armour Dice you have in the pool as its current HP.

When your character is about to take any amount of damage while wearing armour you have the option to declare that the armour blocks the damage and your character takes none of it. To do so you set aside ("break") one d6 from your pool of Armour Dice. This does not change the armour's AV, just like your character's maximum HP does not change when they take...See more

Interesting mechanic, thanks for explaining! But does that mean that when repairing armour, a wizard, for example, has the same chance to repair a suit of chainmail as a dwarven smith? (Because they all just roll the set-aside Armour Dice?) Depending on the type of armour I'd imagine it being pretty frustrating to have a suit of plate (I assume it has the highest AV) break on the first day in the dungeon because of an unlucky dice roll.

Rules-as-written (and as I've understood them myself, of course - I'm not infallible), all PC classes are equally good at repairing their armour. And yes, Plate & Mail is indeed the trickiest to repair on your own.

Your observation's valid for this style of armour rules - it's part of the charm, strategy and at times undoubtedly frustration to deal with tool breakage. If there's 1 point of HP damage coming your way, do you really want to use up an Armour Dice to block it? Probably not until you're starting to run low on HP. If you got only one broken Armour Dice left on your armour, do you want to risk breaking it and the armour with it completely, or do you retreat to your home base to have the armour repaired by an NPC for a price? Might be a good idea.

These choices and Usage Dice in general (which TBH 2e makes use of with certain other types of equipment) add to the uncertainty of an adventure. That, then, can be appealing or frustrating depending on individual likes and dislikes....See more
