The Stygian Library is a creepily genteel dungeon set in an infinite extradimensional library. Each expodition generates its route as it explores, resulting in new locations being iscovered with every visit. Included within:

  • Systems for generating locations within the library, including Entrance Foyers, Map Galleries, Tea Rooms,  Planetariums, Calculation Engines, Phantom Databanks, Paper Beehives, Phantom Pumps, Jarred Brains and the Sheol Computer.
  • 40 monsters tailored to the Library, including Lantern Bearers, Skeleton Crew, Origami Golems, Guardian Shades, Lost Souls, Ink Elementals, Animate Spells, Archivist-Liches, Infernal Merchants, Escaped Fictions, Educated Rodents, Conceptual Wells and the orders of Librarians themselves.
  • A system for searching for specific knowledge within the library's depths, as well as 30 unusual books and the secret knowledge they contain.
  • Tables for generating treasure, dreams, rumors, and various other useful details.
  • A unique class of Mummified Sages, post-human accademics who've dwelled in the Library for decades or more.

It's a big spooky library full of dangerous knowledge, spiritual automata and ghost-fueled computers.

This got a Judge's Spotlight Ennie, which is nice.

So can anyone tell me if it is the White, or the Grey librarians who tend to the calculation? It seems to switch quite a bit. Like on Pg. 11 in the Librarian Description it says that the grey librarians tend to the calculation, but white librarians are attending the actual Sheol Computer on pg 31, yet grey libarians are taking notes in the Dissection Theatre and Lost Souls on pg 50 are specifically avoiding grey librarians, not white. A minor quibble, but something my sharp-as-tacks players will pick up on right away.

Some questions:
(1) Since there is no "Explore the same level" option, it looks like there is no way to have more than one location on a given level. Is that correct? And if not, can you provide an example that illustrates how that would occur.

(2) Can a location appear more than once?

(3) Is Random Event #17 (A bookshelf swings out from the wall to reveal a secret passage! It leads somewhere else on the map. Draw a line leading to a previously explored location, ideally one less deep than the current location.) the only way to have multiple links to a location?

(4) If you can go between locations by smashing through the ceiling, can you do the same by smashing though the floor?

Thanks for the help.

Since "From a given location, the players can Go Deeper multiple times. Each time they do, draw a new line from the current location, branching off.", I can see how repeatedly Going Deeper, then Going Back, then Going Deeper to another location could populate a level with multiple locations. This begs the question can the players Go Back multiple times from a given location?

when you 'go back' you go back to the previous location, retracing your steps. So if you're at the ink vats at depth 10, you can go deeper to depth 11, then back to the ink vats at 10, so you get multiple locations branching of the ink vats. Does that make sense?

The description has multiple spelling mistakes. Please use a spell checker. expodition, iscovered, accademics.

I'm pretty sure the book itself does, too. So it would be unfair not to let you know what you're getting into.

Emmy, would this fit in well with Esoteric Enterprises? I'm guessing a big yes?

The PDF doesn't come with the cover illustration displayed above. Where can I get the cover for my print at home copy?

Is this system specific, or is it system agnostic?

it's statted roughly for things like b/x, lotfp, and stuff like that. That said, the mechanics side of things is pretty minimalistic and not toooo hard to convert to other games.

Fantastic follow-up to Gardens of Ynn, I like this one even more, great aesthetic with encounters/creatures based on paper, ink, human remains, souls, and knowledge itself

Thank you! This drove me nuts. If you want to sell a product based primarily on your ability to write, then at least make sure the description used to sell the thing is proofread.

I am NEVER going to buy a guide to ortography from this designer!!!

I'll buy more of their RPG stuff though, because it's great.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
