BX Ascending for Old School Essentials & Labyrinth Lord

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Do you love B/X Essentials, Old School Essentials, Moldvay’s version of the World’s First RPG, and Labyrinth Lord?

Do you also love some of the innovations from the later edition of the First RPG?

B/X Ascending is a supplement that focuses on unifying the game to a roll-high d20 mechanic based on classic saving throws. It updates the Classes while keeping  Race-As-Class, and adds Paladins, Monks, Rangers, Illusionists, and Druids. It includes Trained and Untrained Skills and treats them as Saving Throws, it uses Ascending AC, and Attack Bonuses.

BX Ascending aims to keep the best parts of Old School Essentials while adding some of the modern ideas we’ve all grown to love.

For those curious about BX Ascending, I know it sounds like I just injected the d20 system into it, but I chose to focus the unified mechanic on the classic saving throw. There are no DCs set by the Referee. Each class and race ability has a target number, just like saving throws in B/X. Additionally, Trained and Untrained Skills are now Saving Throws, as well.

Looking at my old copy of Expert Rules, the Dwarf attack bonus progression doesn't tie up with yours.

Expert for fighters & demihumans is:
lvl 1-3 +1 AB (Thac0 19)
lvl 4-6 +3 Ab (Thac0 17)
lvl 7-9 +6 AB (Thac0 14)

I checked my Cyclopedia & OSE. Both show exaclty the same Thac0 progression.

There are also differences between the cleric/thief progressions too that doesn't tie in with the +1/+3/+6/+8/+10 (or +0/+2/+5/+7/+9 if you prefer OSE's method) progression of BX.

Am I missing something? Did a later printing of the Expert rules change thac0, only to have the old style return in BECMI?

Hey there, I bought a copy of this and was wondering if you can give a version of the PDF that is single page instead of book format? Thanks!

Quick question: why do all the classes start off with a +1 BAB in B/X Ascending? Gavin is doing his own version of AAC, where there is no initial BAB at the first levels, but then they start adding in as THAC0 changes. I guess I don't understand the math, but he's assuming Base AC of 10, which means for the conversions, it's going to be 19-[Descending AC]=AAC.

Hopefully this question makes sense.

In B/X, normal men have a 20 THAC0, while all first level characters have a 19 THAC0. So, a first level character must have +1 BAB compared to a Normal Man. If you start the chart at +0 for Normal Men, then first level characters have +1 BAB, and 9 AC = 11 AAC. This is the math used by BFRPG.

Swords & Wizardry starts AAC at 10, so armor values don't match any version of D&D. That means first level characters must have a +0 BAB, and are equal to Normal Men, which doesn't match classic D&D. In S&W, Normal Men should have to have -1 BAB.

Man, good work and all but why did you make the PDF in booklet format? I usually do print to booklet, but I have a printer program to do that, and this format screws up the ability to print one to a sheet OR to effectively booklet. Do you get what I mean? You doing the work, sort of, in advance means I can't actually do physically on my printer what you envision by your format. If I go full size, everything prints the wrong way and tiny, and if I go booklet it goes the right way but even smaller. The previews give no indication of this layout, either. Both of them make it look like standard 8.5x11 one per page formatting, which is really the only format, aside from A4 from our friends outside North America, that DTRPG should accept, but I've always assumed that they don't vet formats at all and that it was thus caveat emptor; the buyer beware.

Hello. I love these books. Should I wait for the combined pdf and print on demand to be listed? Or will a discounted PoD be available if paid for the PDF??

I will provide a discount coupon for the POD. It will be my first time doing that, so it may take a bit longer to be ready than normal.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
