"Playing Comrades was a good reminder of what really matters…. If you too dream of a day when there are no more billionaires, then playing this game can help you keep your eyes on the prize." —Gita Jackson, Kotaku

Comrades is a tabletop RPG about life in the revolutionary underground. Based on the Apocalypse World engine, it pits players against a corrupt government, forcing them to fight from the shadows to free the people from their chains.

Playing as characters like the Soldier, the Student, the Propagandist, and the Worker, your comrades will mount rallies, stage coups, evade the secret police, and fight fascist goons. A campaign of Comrades can take place in any setting the players dream up—modern or historical, real or imagined—giving them a chance to create a revolution all their own.

Designed by the author of the bestselling Deadball: Baseball With DiceComrades uses simple rules to tell complex stories full of hope, deceit, danger, and betrayal. Taught quickly and run easily, even by novice GMs, Comrades is as fast and dirty as revolution itself.

This 162 page rulebook is available in PDF, softcover, and gorgeous premium hardcover. It includes:

  • Ten playbooks embodying different revolutionary archetypes, including the Demagogue, the Mystic, the Artist, and the Brute
  • A guide to the game’s core rules, which keep the action hurtling along at a breakneck pace
  • Instructions for teaching the game and running the first session
  • A guide to GMing Comrades and making your revolution come alive with minimal between-session prep
  • A complete campaign setting, "Khresht: 1915," that will allow you to start playing immediately
  • Countless examples of play

Your revolution is at hand. It’s time to join the party.

A Note About Content: Like most RPGs, Comrades deals with violence, murder, and mayhem. However, because a campaign of Comrades takes place in a world not far from our own, the rulebook advises players to treat deadly encounters with the seriousness and respect that they deserve. This game does not advocate for political violence, and is instead designed to help players explore the limitations of the use of force for political ends. The GM is told to, "be unsparing about the ugliness and pain that comes with your party’s march to power," and reminded that, "murder may be effective, but that doesn’t make it right."

I have an honest question. I’m asking it with good-will and I hope you take it in that spirit. I’m a moderate politically. My study of history has given me the opinion that Communism (Stalin) and National Socialism (Hitler), Fascism (Mussolini), as well as Oligarchic Crony-Capitalisim (corroding the US system) are immoral systems and are very likely to result in much suffering and evil.

I can’t support a game that supports or glamorizes Communism any more than I can support one that supports or glorifies Fascism. We all have different moral commitments and perspectives and I’m hoping that you can respect any differences we may have in this manner.

Does your game support or glamourize Communism? I’m interested in purchasing it, but I need an honest answer in order to decide. I appreciate any information you can provide. Thanks.

I ended up making the purchase despite not yet getting a response. Obviously, we all have busy lives and the author shouldn’t be expected to notice or have the time—or the inclination—to answer every question. I’ve heard good things about the game, so even if it’s not my cup of tea politically, it will very likely be useful for game design purposes.

I’ll make sure to give some feedback once I have an opportunity to check out the game, in case others have a question similar to the one I posted about whether it glorifies Communism.

I may be a little late replying to this as you have already purchased the book and your question has probably already been answered, but I'll just add my two bits here in case anyone else is wondering the same thing.

Short answer is no, this game does not glamourize Communism, but it is inspired by revolutionaries of primarily left-wing political movements in the 20th century. However, the main tenents of the game/setting is that the characters (comrades) are fighting against a cruel and oppressive government in a society that is on the verge of collapse. It is entirely up to you how you want that oppressive government to be. You can play as Marxists or anarchists attempting to overthrow a staid oligarchy or you can play as pro-democracy/pro-capitalist revolutionaries against a corrupt Communist system in a fall-of-the-Soviet-Union style game.

Playbooks may need a tweak or two depending on what side of the spectrum you want to play on, but in general, Comrades can have any kind of ideological...See more

"Communism = Stalin = worse than sHitler", the enlightened Centrist said, who had never once heard of Marx, Engels, or Lennin in his supposed "study".

Oh, I know what you'd say. "bUt sTaLiN uSeD iT tO dEfEnD gEnOcIdE!" Yes he did. And US had used Capitalism to defend genocide for decades now. Why does US and Capitalism get a pass?

It's interesting that you feel the need to specify that "Oligarchic Crony-Capitalisim (corroding the US system)" as the only form of Capitalism that's bad, suggesting you believe that the rest of the system is completely fine. Yet you see absolutely no reason to distinguish between the many different schools of Communism, from Cultural Marxism to Anarcho-Communism, because you believe that one (1) tyrant committing genocide in its name is enough to discard the entire ideology, but when some people do some bad thing in the name of Capitalism, you just separate those people into their own category. How Centrist.

"bUt ThErE iS oNlY oNe HiTlEr, AnD nAzI bAd!" Yes and yes. Here's the thing though: Nazism is built upon the amoral idea of racial intolerance from the first place, while if you had actually read anything about Communism at all, you'll find that it's...not. I sure hope you can see the difference between an ideology that's built for genocide, and an ideology that's built for something else that got appropriated for genocide. Then again, I guess you Centrists are too enlightened to be bothered by petty details like morality.

I think 'This book triggers fascists' should be the tagline for this product, based on the comments here.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
