A Baker's Dozen of Noble Families

ADD TO WISHLIST >

In any fantasy setting that is remotely medieval or feudal in base, noble families wield a great deal of power and are of great importance. They can become patrons, allies or foes of player characters, a source of quests and help or a constant pain in the characters' side. It's useful to have some families that can be dropped into a campaign.

This is a collection of thirteen different families to use. Individuals in the families aren't given; instead, the family itself is described, as well as such as its history, interests and power, behaviour and habits.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here are the families:

  • Dredgers: This clan of backwater swamp barons earned their lands with blood and spite. Reclusive and little seen, there is more to them than most know.
  • Tercels: The king's hawks, the Tercels formed some of the nation's first irregular units, and fought hard for the throne. With impeccable honor and sharp swords, they're often held up as paragons.
  • High Hall: Bankers and money men, these masters of coin found they couldn't buy their way into the aristocracy. But the forgiveness of loans, and the hiring of swords, are both very persuasive.
  • Storvall: A clan as famous for its artisans as for its pacifism, it was when the Storvalls took in orc refugees, and made a stand alongside them against a threat from the deep, that they hammered their names in steel.
  • Star Gazers: A rather widespread clan of elves and half-elves, the Star Gazers are famed for their wisdom, their learning, their curiosity, and their artistry. Those who have thought them defenseless, though, have been taught that war is just another art to master.
  • Far Walkers: A highland clan of small folk, it's the Far Walkers good natures and concern for their neighbors that got them raised to a high seat. A seat they've done their best to earn with every generation.
  • Crowsbeak: Descended from gravediggers, this funerary family is often avoided. When it comes time for someone to do the dirty work that keeps the kingdom going, though, theirs is the first name on everyone's lips.
  • Silvers: Named for the color of their blades, these knights errant have a well-earned reputation as monster hunters. Some of the hardest warriors in the land, they face terrors that would send others running.
  • Blackbriar: A dark and brooding line, the Blackbriar's have a sour reputation. Lords of a shadowed forest, there are many who fear the rituals and customs that have tied them so firmly to their lands.
  • Flinders: Farmers and hosts without equal, the Flinders have an honesty and impartiality that is beyond reproach. Peace makers by reputation, there are some who suspect them of being the power behind the throne.
  • Causeways: Powerful merchants who found their wares constantly under attack from bandits on the roads they had funded, the Causeways ensured that guards were plenty, and the roads open to all. With enough hired swords in their employ, the kingdom doubled its standing forces by raising them to the nobility.
  • Harthway: The Hounds of Harthway are fearsome, bold, and loyal. Though there are some that say their crest is not the only feral thing about this particular family.
  • Stonejaw: Orc mercenaries without equal on the battlefield, the Stonejaws were so feared that often simply hiring their warriors would bring peace talks. When one small kingdom couldn't pay them in gold, it did offer them something they wouldn't receive from anyone else… standing high among its nobles.

Wonderful stuff! Each noble house has a unique schtick that makes them notable while still being easily dropped in to nearly any fantastical kingdom, and each one has hints of meat and mystery that can be kept as is or expanded upon at the user's choi [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
