Take your Fate game into the great unknown with the Fate Space Toolkit! The Toolkit requires Fate Core to play. Inside you'll find:

  • Guidelines for creating a space-faring game without breaking your table's sense of what's plausible.
  • Multiple options for deciding how space-travel works in your setting, from star charts to rocket ships.
  • A variety of tools for making your space fights exciting and consistent with your setting.
  • Guidance on creating aliens and alien worlds.
  • Five ready-to-go campaign-starter settings showcasing all of the toolkit's tools in action.

This is the Prototype Edition of the Fate Space Toolkit. What's that mean?

TL;DR: There's no art, but sales of this will help us get art, and once we get art, we'll upgrade your PDF to one with art at no added cost.

The Fate Space Toolkit has had a rocky ride through asteroid-filled space to reach you in its present form.

Towards the end of 2018, after the text and layout was done, but before we could schedule its release and art acquisition effort, Evil Hat realized it was over-extended and needed to slim back its product offerings for the coming year. You can read more about this in our public blog post from then, found here: https://www.evilhat.com/home/refocused-resized-hat-mode-activated/

At any rate, Fate Space ended up right on the cusp there—in the “neutral zone” as it were. There wasn’t budget to make the art happen any time soon, let alone put it into print. But the text, the glorious text, that was done, and well worth reading. So how to get it out to folks?

In the end we’ve landed on this, the Prototype Edition of the Fate Space Toolkit. We’ll sell it in this art-free form (the lavender rectangles throughout the text are place-holders for eventual artwork) until it generates enough revenue to pay for the missing art budget (that’ll require at least 500 sales). Once we have that, we can commission the art, and at least provide a final version of the book in electronic form. (If that happy event comes to pass, we’ll upgrade all purchases of the Prototype Edition PDF to the full final PDF version at no added cost.)

As to whether or not the book will see print, who knows? At the least, if we get the budget for art, we’ll be able to take a look at making it available as a print-on-demand title here on DriveThruRPG.

We've hit 500! It'll be a number of months before we can do the upgrade, but it is now officially happening. :)

That is fantastic news! Congratulations - and in approximately a week?! Amazing!

My impression from the KS preview was that this was one of the best Fate books I'd ever seen and I can't wait to put an illustrated version on my shelf!

Let us know what we need to do/buy/kickstart to get it in hardback! I REALLY want a copy of this on my shelf that matches the other toolkits.

Does this make the POD version more likely now?

More likely, sure, but I'm not committing to it until we have a complete digital version.

I picked up the PDF, but I really hope you can make a physical print edition... the little FATE Core hardcovers are
some of the nicest books in my rpg collection. I hope this, Shadow of the Century, and Fate of Cthulhu are huge successes for you!

Picking this up is contingent on a few things so I need to know if they are addressed so here goes. 1. Is there a system for addressing races where as an example Trandoshans are stronger than Humans but Wookies are stronger than Trandoshans ie +0 Human, +1 Trandoshan, +2 Wookie, it's something I haven't seen addressed and I've struggled with how to do it in FATE

And 2 Are there Lightsaber/Laser Swords? :) Thanks

This isn't a Fate Science Fiction/Fantasy Toolkit (far too broad), it's a Fate Space Toolkit. The focus is primarily on space-faring setting building and covers some the tools needed for that. It does talk about the creation of alien worlds, species, and cultures, tho more at the big picture level rather than drilling down into the specifics of stats-implementation that are by nature going to vary from table to table.

Is there a plan for discounts to purchasers of this PDF if a. POD version becomes available?

I generally prefer buying PDF's that can be purchased with a print form (and thus Evil Hat's provision for PDFs with purchase of a print book).

I've done very little POD at DriveThruRPG, so I'm not sure how that would work. POD is a cart that must necessarily follow the horse of getting the art funded, commissioned, and placed, tho.

Clearly you answered a question that wasn't asked. There is reference in the description exactly covering what you've said.

Thanks though.

What was clear that I was saying you were putting the cart before the horse, and I'm focused on the horse.

I grew up playing Traveller and I've been looking forward to seeing the Space Toolkit since it was on the cards.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to help bring the final version of the toolkit to life.

I for one have had good experiences with the Print on Demand via DTR and would love to be able to purchase PDF+Printed version of Evil Hat products, as it means I can support EH, get my hands on them quicker Hehe.

Would it be possible to get a table of contents? Does the game support "realistic" mecha (e.g. Gundam or Battletech?) Would it be possible to do something along the lines of the Alien movie? (i.e. retro-sci-fi.)

Thanks,
Antonio

It's not a mecha book, it's about sci-fi space adventure. Tachyon Squadron covered the "we're all elite fighter pilots" thing and this covers the much broader, "We're all in a spaceship" genre. It covers ground as varied as Star Trek and Firefly, but not giant robots. The Alien movie is covered better by the Horror Toolkit, IMO.

Jason K is correct. This is the Fate *Space* Toolkit. Not the Fate *Science Fiction* Toolkit. The latter would've been far too broad.

True, but I've found it a fascinating read. The writers break down ways of thinking about the creation of a Sci-Fi campaign that are profound and thought provoking. Highly recommended to anyone thinking of GMing a Sci-Fi campaign whether or not they intend to use Fate.

Also, totally worth the money- even without any art. *****

Loved your Horror Toolkit. I read about your troubles and I was going to get this when it came out. Glad to have contributed what little I could. FATE is my go-to system these days and I definitely would like you guys to keep up the excellent work.

Keep an eye on the metal status (currently showing silver). I think around Platinum it will have hit 500 copies.

Huh. I always assumed Plat had to be way higher than that.

Honestly I always thought Electrum represented at least a thousand. Shows what I know.

It's entirely possible — I haven't broken down the numbers recently (last time was a number of years back), and I think they redefined them at some point, added more metals, etc.

Yeah, y'know, I probably should have said Gold? Something like that. We're showing Electrum now and are currently at 350 copies. I suspect it's something like Copper - 50, Silver - 100, Electrum - 250, Gold - 500, Platinum - 1000, Mithral & Adamantine - ???

I've also read about hardships your company's going through, hope this helps. I was worried that Toolkit lines would discontinue, but thankfully my worries are unfound. Financial problems aside, Political issues that tempt to spill over from real world to interfere with suspension of disbelief is such a headache nowadays. I wonder how you guys are coping with that?

As a Tachyon Squadron backer, I already have this, but I'm so glad to see it made available in this form - I thought the Space Toolkit was one of the best Fate books I'd ever read.

I too am a Tachyon Squadron Backer, but I've purchased this understanding that this would cover wider range of sci-fi genre, like former toolkits they've published.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
