100 Irrelevant Notes and Letters to Bamboozle Players II

Players will often come across various notes and letters that are important and useful to whatever quest they are pursuing. However, if only important notes are detailed, it becomes pretty clear which ones are relevant.

Here, then, are 100 different notes, letters, demands, lists, reports, threats, evidence of conspiracies or the ravings of madmen that all look like they might be important, but have no actual meaning - unless, of course, the GameMaster decides otherwise. These can be used to answer the question, "What do we find?" with some misleading answers. Alternatively, they could be used as a source of adventure hooks or ideas.

There are two tables. The main one is the list of actual notes and there is a supplementary one that gives 12 different conditions for the notes to be found in (a thirteenth is naturally neither damaged nor unusual).

Most of the notes are suitable for any setting, including modern and futuristic. Some may need tweaking to remove references to magic or supernatural creatures. Names and places can be added or changed to be more relevant to a setting or adventure.

• Drask, Get back here at once. You are being replaced. Tell your troops to wait until they receive further orders. If you are not back by sunset tomorrow, there will be a bounty placed on your head. Optional as to whether or not it is still attached to your body. Lornan.
• Edgan, Joining us in our efforts was a wise choice. I hope you will continue to proceed with such wisdom. Matters are underway to transform the occupants of the target village into the creatures, adding more utterly loyal soldiers to our
• cause. Make sure that any who do not transform are eliminated; no word of this must spread outside the village. The newly-transformed creatures are bound to be hungry, which will provide an easy way of disposing of the failures. Lord Q.
• F. You have not been shipping out in the quantities that you were previously. We can manage for now but we expect to see your shipments increase again by the next cycles, when there will be an increased need. If they don’t increase, be aware that there will be consequences. You won’t like them. We heard that another lost an entire shipment during the inclement weather. Recover this and there will be a reward for you. Z.
• Finally, we have found it! That map was the best purchase I ever made - so much for it being a fake created to gull the credulous. This will be an excellent place for me to continue with my studies and experimentation, far from awkward questions, and those whose fear led them to exile me. Fools, one and all, gutless, mewling children clinging to their mother’s apron strings. This banishment will prove to be a blessing in disguise, for the Stone is finally mine. My initial experiments with the Stone have been successful, and I no longer have to fear that my followers will lose heart or betray me, for the Stone’s magic has ensured that will now never happen. Soon, those who banished me will know true fear. Not the fear that led them to force me out, but true fear. Fear of what I am going to become. Then, there shall be a reckoning.
• For too long business has been terrible. It has never been good. This was not a wise place to set up shop; there is minimal passing trade and the villagers show little interest. So I have done something. A strange man came and sat in the common room the other day. Travellers are a rarity, so I sat with him when asked and talked about my problems with getting customers in the door and keeping them inside. He said he would think about it and came back with a suggestion. I have made what he advised, and indeed it seems to have worked. Business has never been better. There may be a downside to this bargain in the long run, but that’s a worry for the future. For now, I have customers who want to spend their money.
