100 Less Than Useful Books to Find on an Urth Bookshelf

In a setting, books can be an important source of knowledge, clues and background, and they may even have value as treasure. Not every book will be of this type though. Some may be factually wrong, contain misinformation or just not have any particular relevance. This supplement provides 100 different books of this sort of type that can be used to flesh out a bookshelf. They may still be worth a small amount of money, as in a fantasy settings books can still be uncommon. Whether or not any particular book has game value or is a source of accurate information is up to the GM.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here are some sample results:

  • Tales from Tear by Heinor Malborge (Stories of Tear pre-dating its conquest by Horus; the tales are dark and brutal in nature, partially to emphasise what a difference Horus has made to the land)
  • Tales of the Pirate Isles by Rob Ingoiare (A collection of various myths and legends from the Pirate Isles, of sunken cities, serpent civilisations, mad deities and powerful relics; the author does not judge the veracity of any of the tales)
  • Tear: The Making of Horus by Jorkan Bold (How the quest to tame the Borderlands of Tear turned Horus from an idle wastrel into a competent ruler and leader)
  • The Black Hand by Yarrow Teague (Claims to contain the truth about the Black Hand, the assassin’s guild of Azūl, the City of Death, including how and where it operates and its techniques; contains so many errors that it may actually be disinformation published by the assassins themselves)
  • The Blötland Campaign by Janus Thorn (A history of the Empire’s invasion of Blötland and the destruction of most of the jotuns, but written several centuries later by an academic with no military experience, and as a result contains numerous errors)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
