GM's Map #86: Boarding House

Multiple File Formats

Map making can be time-consuming and sometimes frustrating for GMs, especially GMs with limited time to begin with. In our new 'GM's Maps' range, we will be providing a range of pre-made maps for you to use in your games.

GM's Map #86: The boarding House presents a large boarding house, perfect to home your PCs or to provide them with a place of investigation and adventure. The old building stands on a residential street, it's five floors providing room and board for numerous tenant's. Suitable as any class of boarding house, be it a virtual slum or a high-class establishment for bachelors of means. Similarly, the map may be set in various historical periods from the near future back to the 18th century – or perhaps even in a fantasy setting.

The map itself is presented in 3 versions, a simple (old school) map with a square grid, one without the grid and a full-colour version.

In addition to the maps themselves, the product includes a PDF containing a key, some background information on boarding houses and there role across various historical periods and a dozen adventure ideas that you can expand upon and which use the map presented here.

Sample Adventures from this product:-

5/. Where Have All the People Gone?
3 days ago the entire population of the boarding house disappeared... or did they? A government scientist who was staying at the house took home a piece of alien technology to study and perhaps sell on once he’d discovered its secrets.

The item was a Phase Shifter. All the people are still there but out of phase with reality, including the scientist.

The scientist has left clues on how to reverse the process, where the phase shift is weakest in our part of reality. The clues are scattered around the house. On papers. On mirrors with lipstick. Written in sand or salt on tables. Recorded snippets on mobile phone voicemails, etc.

The only problem is the Phase Shifter is beginning to malfunction. It’s not designed to be left on for periods of 3 days. Part way through the scenario people will start phasing back into our reality. The only problem is they’ll be dead and horribly disfigured (maybe not even recognisable/detectable as human) and worse still the more of these post Phase Shifted corpses that enter our reality; the radiation their bodies are dosed in will begin to break down the surrounding world.

Trapped people can occasionally appear as ghost-like figures and the scientist may even find ways to re-substantiate themselves for moments to give the party clues as to solving the issue of shutting down the machine and saving the house and the surrounding city from being sucked into oblivion. Choose your distance. The room the device is in. The house. The district. The city. The country. The world?

2/. Number 13
The boarding house that the PCs are all staying in for various reasons, is plagued with strange noises at night. The professor, a finicky man of middling years, swears it's coming from next door to him, and the author, a louche young chap in his twenties, swears it's coming from next door to him, Only they are next door to one another in rooms 12 and 14, respectively. Both swear that they have seen people coming and going from room 13, which the owner of the building insists cannot be possible. The superstitious forebears of the current owner refused to have a room 13 in the establishment.

Can the PCs get to the bottom of the mystery?

I've picked up several of these maps over the years, but this one has become a favorite of mine. The "Number 13" adventure idea is a good one and worked well in my game.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
