The Book of Random Tables: Quests

Need adventure ideas for Dungeons & Dragons or Pathfinder? Cut down your GM prep with 1000 quest options.

This book is a collection of quests or adventure ideas for use in fantasy tabletop role-playing games.

The ideas are organized by a broad topic and are placed in a random table format. Each table has one hundred ideas. You can use these adventure ideas to run RPG sessions in several ways.

You can read through the tables and choose an idea. You can take several ideas and combine them into one scenario for a campaign. You can roll randomly on a table to find an adventure on the fly. You can also use these ideas as side quests within original or premade campaigns.

The first six tables contain ideas that range from story hooks to scenarios to globe-spanning adventures. These tables are organized under the topics: Dungeons Hooks, Royal Quests, Forest Quests, Doorways to Another World, Town Quests, and Sea Quests.

The next three tables are as follows: Questing Beasts, Quest Objects, and Lost Cities. Here you will find the name of a thing and a bit of context. These are meant to be used as the goal of the quest. How the goal is attained is up to the gamemaster.

Meta-Quests is the last table in the book. It is a list of simple ideas that can be used as micro-quests much like collecting feathers in Angry Birds or bobbleheads in the Fallout videogames.

I got my 3 print on demand books today (Quests 1,2,3), and I want to say I am pleased with the physical product.
9 bucks an item is a good DM investment. The cost for me to get them printed in my normal fashion would have been about the same.

I dislike using digital, so for me physical is my preferred method. These will be valued adds to my game shelf.

So, I bought the 3 Quest Pdf files. Likely should have bought one first, then I'd have known to buy the books instead :)
Only real complaint other than I disliked locked pdf files, is these are not tables strictly speaking in the usual sense. They are a selection of themes that have 100 entries each.
I suppose you can roll d100 and take what is offered. But they appear more as 100 good ideas a DM might be able to create if they had nothing to do all day long between games. I don't mind getting all of that creativity handed to me on a plate.
For the price, which is minor, you get 80 pages in the first book full of really creative starting points based on the theme.

They are not massively detailed, I never expected them to be though. It's d100 starting points, not d100 adventure modules. Which is ok. I don't normally use adventure modules. Too much work trying to ensure I read everything correctly.
The first Forest quest begins with "the trees in the forest are dying, and...See more

Any way to remove the borders to make the pages more printer-friendly?

Not sure exactly what the issue could be. I just double-checked the download file and it is fine. Maybe check for updates on your PDF reader. I've heard of that causing issues in the past.

I had this problem on several tablet devices, as well (all Android). I ended up having to download a set of 3rd party pdf readers until I found a few that could open this properly. The publisher assured me that they had tested and failed to repeat my problem. Perhaps it is designed via an Apple platform and some fonts just aren't available? No way to know without testing this more, but I mainly just wanted to sound off and let you know that it didn't only happen to you.

I just downloaded the full-size sample, and it's got the same problem. It appears as though the font in the tables themselves are fine, however, the headings of the tables and all of the front of the book just utilize a font that doesn't appear to be recognized by my Adobe Reader app.

I'm working DriveThhru to discover and resolve the issue. Every reader or device I use displays it perfectly.

Hi Matthew - this can be a common problem with pdf files if the text isn't embedded - there are a few steps to guard against this described in Amazon's self-publishing guidelines. I know this isn't Amazon but the process will be similar. Apologies if you've tried all this so far- just on the off chance https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G202188020

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
