A Study in Storytelling: Volume 1

A collection of short fiction, plot hooks, and adventure seeds for you to remix and reimagine for your tabletop campaign.

A Study in Storytelling breaks down works of short fiction into plot hooks and story goals usable in your tabletop roleplaying game. Using classic Sherlock Holmes tales by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, these elements can be used with any system, any setting, and any genre. Enjoy the stories, then recycle, re-imagine, and remix them for your own fantasy, science fiction, and horror campaigns.

This is a new format for deconstructing the stories, and is not connected to the old edition of the A Study in Storytelling series.

The book contains the following:

  • 4 short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes and author of many crime, science fiction, and fantasy stories.

  • Plot hooks and story goals drawn from each story, for you to use as a creative springboard for your own adventures.

  • Notes on story structure, and the events that need to take place in the beginning, the middle and the end of your adventure.

  • Discussion on the types of player characters, adversaries, and supporting characters needed to play out each story.

  • Notes on key locations required for each story, and thoughts on alternatives that could also work.

  • An overview of the obstacles player characters have to face in order to achieve the story goal, and how to adapt the story’s hindrances.

  • Notable objects that appear in the story, along with which are absolutely necessary to the plot, and which serve other purposes.

The premise of this product is good, but the analysis itself is not as thorough as I was looking for. I feel like there was a missed opportunity here, unsure if later volumes in this series are better.

I don't mind the more "minimalist" design, but it is a little plain.

I'm having trouble with this download. The JPG and EPUB files seem fine, but I couldn't open the PDF - it turned out that the MOBI and PDF files are both 0 bytes. I've tried re-downloading but I'm still having the same issue.

I just checked the files on the back end, everything looked okay, and I was able to download and open them. I deleted and re-uploaded them again in case there was some technical error with the site reading them, they looked okay on the back end, and I was able to download them. If you continue having problems, contact DriveThruRPG support.

Thanks - I gave it another try and the mobi file came through fine, but not the PDF. I'll talk to DriveThruRPG support.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
