Palace of the Vampire Queen (Classic Reprint)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

VintageCollection.pngPrecis Intermedia brings back the first known commercially-published adventure for the original Roleplaying Game (First Edition/OD&D/0E). Originally released in 1976 by Wee Warriors, Palace of the Vampire Queen is a 5-level dungeon with what was called pre-factored creatures and treasures (in other words, this is essentially a stocked dungeon). While hit points are provided for the creatures, the First Edition RPG or an OSR equivalent (B/X recommended) is required for actual rules and their descriptions.

For three centuries, the peasants of the Dwarvish island of Baylor have feared the raids of the Vampire Queen and her minions. Sweeping down at night from the palace in the shrouded peaks of the island, they range ever farther in their search for blood. The most recent victim was the Princess of Baylor, daughter of King Arman, who was taken in a midnight raid. King Arman has offered fabulous riches and land holdings with titles to the person or persons who can brave the stronghold of the Vampire Queen and return his daughter to him alive and well.

This piece of gaming history is a must for collectors and old school gamers. With the original on the extremely rare list, this classic reprint of Palace of the Vampire Queen has been remastered for a clean print, and is readily available at a low cost.

Note: SFW (safe for work) version of cover image is displayed by default, but NSFW (not safe for work) image can be toggled in the PDF. Parchment background on cover can also be toggled on and off for easier printing. (Requires Adobe Reader or other PDF viewer that can handle layers).

This PDF now matches the second printing of the classic reprint, with cover image from the 1977 printings (the previous classic reprint used a reproduced image, since the original was not available at the time).

Wow, this brings back memories. I was first introduced to D&D and tabletop gaming after wandering into a little shop in a small California college town called Wee Warriors (the shop, not the town), owned and run by the author of this module. If I recall correctly, these were the very first published D&D adventures. Thanks for keeping these pieces of history available.

Good thing I remastered it for sharp printing ;) It's a load of fun and a good window into the mindset for early dungeons (I stress dungeons over adventures when I say that).

I prefer hard copies to pdfs. Bret I'll get this made into a booklet if anything just to give you the feedback here. If you look at the Red Box Dungeons and Dragons Players book here on DTRPG you can see where I did the same thing for that book.
Give me a week and I'll make this one my next project.

Is the reprint totally accurate to the original? Level 2 is missing a section describing Room 32, and I'm curious if that's a hold-over from the original (in which case, neat, if mildly annoying!) or if it's an error that crept in during the otherwise fantastic remastering process. Either way, would you happen to know what the line for Level 2, Room 32 is? I didn't see any other missing rooms, but I only gave it a quick glance over.

It is accurate with the exception of correcting a few typos. Room Lvl2, 32 was missing in the original. It's either empty or open to customization. If you get The Dwarven Glory (the next in the series), the original was missing an entire section, which has been added as a bonus.

Ah, neat! I was curious because Room 3 declares it has orcs in it, so it seems to me like some thought was put into what's in there. Thanks for the info.

This is probably how the first adventures were played, essentially being dungeons of stuff, rather than focusing on the modern-day narratives behind them.

LOL I just was looking at this and noticed the toggle NSFW on the side bar. I got a huge chuckle out of the cover. Thanks

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
