Thorston, the Shunned Town on the Dee - A Call of Cthulhu Setting and Scenario Set for Cthulhu by Gaslight

Thorston

The coastal “town” of Thorston is like a bedraggled, half-dead beast washed upon the shore of the Dee Estuary. It was once a happy community but now lies overgrown and gently fading into obscurity, its remnants a haven for scavengers, the dispossessed, and worse things that ply their midnight trades. Found in the north-west of England, on the Wirral Peninsula, between the industrial port city of Liverpool and the county seat of Chester, Thorston is mostly ignored by its neighbours out of a general sense of unease, either at the dilapidated state of the vagabond-infested ruins or something much more primal which grips at the hearts of those who venture too close. Will it survive much past the 1890s or will it finally be allowed to die?

For use with 7th edition Call of Cthulhu and Hudson & Brand Inquiry, Agents of the Obscure

The Town of Thorston

The Shunned Town on the Dee

Chapter 1: Introduction reveals the full hostory of the town, from its first mention in the Domesday Book of William I to the middle of the 19th century, when the town fell under a black cloud of ill-fortune.

Chapters 2-3: The Decrepit Town & Inhabitants provides an overview of the run-down town before delving into points of interest. The people of the town is covered next, similar fashion. Both chapters reference a map of Thorston. Other small towns near Thorston, on the Wirral, are also included.

Chapter 4: Secrets & Lies illuminates why the nights are darker, the winds chillier, and why the cursed reputation of the town clings to life.

Chapter 5: The Walled City is a very brief brief guide to Chester, 'the Arkham on the Dee,' containing a map of the ancient city and descriptions of some of the locations.

Chapter 6: Supping with the Devil has the Investigators exploring the dilapidated coastal town of Thorston.

Chapters 7-8: Dramatis Personae & Maps details a few allies and villains and provides additional maps for the setting and scenario.

The setting and scenario is supported by 7 maps and introduces 8 NPCs, a name generator, and 1 new Mythos tome with a new spell.

WHat is this supplement about? Is it a takeoff of Deep Ones visit England AKA Innsmouth on the Dee? The discription never said.

I grew up on the Wirral. Which real life town is this based on? Please tell me it is my home town of Neston!

Per the author, "Just a generic-ish coastal community," although he did hint that at least one person in the village is based on someone he knew.

Looks great! And it is basically named after ME (Thorston = Thorsten - same name like Jon and John)!

Any chance to see a POD-option soon?

Nitpicking here, but Thorston is translated as "Thor's town", whereas the Germanic/Scandinavian Thorsten means, I think, "Thor's stone".

... which is short for "Stonehammer of the Thundergod".
Thanks for the nitpick, "The Steady", but in MY BOOK they named it after ME! ;-)

The "-ton" suffix is probably the English suffix for "town," as in "Bolton," "Neston," "Upton," "Beeston," "Peckforton," and "Poulton."

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
