17th Century Minimalist

Welcome to the 17th century minimalist.

This is a fast-paced and highly-deadly game with a pinch of black humour that puts characters as wanderers in 17th century Europe. You will play as tricksters, thieves, former soldiers, bankrupt swashbucklers and petty physicians, roaming the Old Continent in search of coin and glory. The system is designed to allow fast character creation, compatibility with other games (mostly in the OSR community) and a reckless style of play.

  • All rules are simplified and compressed to their essence.
  • It assumes a historical, low-fantasy setting in the 17th century.
  • It has firearms with flintlocks.
  • It does not have magic.
  • Combat is faster, deadlier and scarier.
  • Why? Because characters do not gain more HP in higher levels.
  • It has novel mechanics for experience and reputation. The two together offer opportunities for a more narrative style of play.

What do you get?

A complete minimalist rules system in 40 pages with five different classes, simplified combat mechanics including a 1600s firearms section, a commerce section, disease and poison rules, and basic rules for campaigning.

CHECK OUT... the 17th "Mini Adventure Folder", sold separately, with five mini adventures compatible with this rulebook.

Any chance this will receive a POD version or get another print run?

Give me a hint here: if it doesn't have increasing HP, how do you increase a character's defense with experience?

Defense rolls?
Increased defense skills?
Somehow I don't think getting heavier and heavier armour fits the period (if you're even using Armour Class as defense - some other OSR titles turn it into damage reduction).

Hi Asen, I only recently bought the RPG, but I can confirm that they instead have an armour-deflection-like mechanic. The armour absorbs damage instead of the PC taking it. The heavier the armour, the more hits it can take.

Thank you...but that's not "increasing with experience" :). It's increasing via equipment.

I am not sure about this, but I think you may be entirely missing the point of the game design on this topic.

What is "the purpose of the game design" that I'm missing, Tibbius G? "More experienced characters being (generally) harder to kill in the same circumstances"?
Maybe I am.

A unique take on OSR, even if you don't want or plan to run the system itself. 5/5 Stars.

Are there any chances of a printer-friendly version without colored backgrounds?

Would love to see some Age of Sail/Pirate related material: Some new maritime classes, naval warfare and ships and maybe a mass combat system.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
