STARSHINE is a cozy, colorful space questing game inspired by science fantasy like Heavy Metal, Fantastic Planet, and Farscape. It utilizes a narrative playstyle and seperate, modular subsystems to portray ship creation, space travel, ship combat, and dungeon delving. Fully illustrated with System R's alien inhabitants and otherworldly star maps, it contains everything players need to run a weird, electric galaxy romp. You won't need any minis or supplemental materials - only 3d6.

The R is filled with psychedelic ruins, alien mysteries, and daring stellar missions. Players take on the roles of Nauts - questers carving out a name and fortune from the cold, electric void. They'll face off against mind-melting alien artifacts, corrupt covens of bestial warlocks, and the cruelty of dark space itself in a struggle to keep afloat on the star sea.

  • A plethora of cosmic adversaries & dangerous vessels
  • Stellar missions of daring delves and dirty dealings
  • Thrilling, minimalist space ship combat
  • Modular starship creation system
  • Four weird alien species for Nauts
  • 20+ gadgets & gizmos
  • Star maps of the R

Hi. Could we get a little more information on the system and how it runs, please? Narrative or trad? Mat-n-minis or Theatre of the Mind? Just saying, "2d6, GM guided" doesn't give us much to go on.

Hello! Good point. We added a small 'how it works' section to the description to briefly describe mechanics. Overall, this is a traditional theatre of the mind style game. It doesn't necessarily have a core mechanic, but you'll most often be rolling 2d6 with failure, mixed success, and success as your results. Ship combat happens turn by turn, wherein each member of the crew dedicates their entire turn to a single action - repairing, combating, piloting, etc. Space faring uses a map based travel system where you move along pathes from destination to destination, rationing fuel and plotting your course so as to avoid getting stranded. There's a lot more, but hopefully that clears up some confusion.

When you say, "traditional theatre of the mind style", what do you mean?

By traditional, I mean to imply there aren't a lot of heavy fiction first mechanics. The game is more akin to a minimalist dungeon crawler, or even an OSR game in terms of its mechanics. Theater of the mind wise, this game is not meant to be played with any maps or miniatures, and instead occurs scene by scene. The mechanics have a very small learning curve, so this game is closer to honey heist than it is knave despite its larger page count.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
