Overview

Infinium Game Studio produces richly-detailed, useful maps for our adventures.  An average of nearly 250 maps per adventure means that each and every building and region are meticulously laid out.  Mapmaking is our pride and joy, and something we obsess over.

Nearly each and every map also features both a GM and a Player-redcated version.  Player-redacted versions hide annotations and secret areas, and can easily be presented to the players as handouts without revealing anything unneeded.

A Lifetime Subscription

At any given moment, The Ebon Cartographer is priced to represent the mapping content that is currently published and available.  More maps are released all the time as IGS continues to produce world-class indie RPG content.

As an Ebon Cartographer owner, you'll automatically receive all of those maps for free as we release them.

PDF Atlases & Individual Map Files for VTT

The Ebon Cartographer includes each and every full-featured PDF Atlas IGS produces for adventure content.  In addition to these laid-out book-format PDFs, each version of each map is provided as an ultra-high-resolution (>=4K) individual map image file. 

You're free to use these in your own GMing material, to print out, or to load into VTT programs for personal, non-commercial use.

GM & Player Versions of Every Map

Nearly every single map offered in our Atlases includes two versions: a full, GM version, and a Player-redacted version.  

Player versions omit secret doors and areas, and remove annotations to maximize usability as a player handout.

Below is a simple example of the common differences between the two versions.

Thanks for reaching out! Sorry for the confusion: That single zipfile with the first three Tile packs has been replaced by SIX zipfiles, each containing a Tile pack.

.rar is a compressed file archive format, similar to .zip. It'd be used here to bundle the files into a smaller number of downloads.

If you are using windows, I'd suggest googling 7-zip, which is a free and open source archive tool. It will allow you to open and extract files from the .rar file. It also handles many other formats, and lets you create things like password-protected .zip (or .7z) files. I use it regularly and can highly recommend it.

I haven't used any similar software on Mac for nearly a decade, but a quick google search suggest "The Unarchiver" or "RAR for Mac".

Linux uses unrar, which you can probably find in your favourite or your distro's repository.

WinRAR is an option as well. To be completely honest, I hadn't appreciated that one of the compressed files was RAR format instead of ZIP, and hadn't realized that RAR wasn't something that most OSes could natively unpack without additional software. Sorry for the hassle!

I purchased this exact item (the exact 20 files listed) back on Feb. 25, 2020. I have not received any notifications since the original purchase and my online DriveThruRPG Library shows the same 20 files with no additions. Has there been any additional maps since Feb. 2020, and if so, how do I get my free lifetime maps?

I’ve published tons of dm tools and sourcebooks since Ebon Cartographer was released, but no new adventures.

Rest assured I have many in the pipeline, and if you’ve opted into comms from DTRPG, you will absolutely be notified whenever there are new maps. I’ll also be posting a comment here.

Hi, I notice the description says these maps include GM and player versions (which is excellent). Would they happen to include gridless versions as well?

Short answer: No, but future ones will.

Longer answer: This is a package of all of the maps that I did for our existing adventures. In those times, producing GM and Player versions was a huge priority, as I believe that any RPG product that has maps, MUST include player-redacted versions, otherwise you'll never be able to share them when running a game!

But I didn't generate gridless versions. The real honest reason is that until the pandemic, I never used VTT apps, so wasn't familiar with how having gridless maps is probably preferable to gridded ones if you're going to use them in VTT. To go back and regenerate everything without grids would unfortunately take more time than I have :(.

Going forward, though, I will absolutely be generating gridless versions of every map I produce. (Check out the Aquilae Cartographer, for example, whose overland maps are each available in hexed, gridded, or neither.)

The subscription does not seem to be working as advertised. I purchased this product when it was launched, and now new maps have been added to it. The product is no longer free, but expects me to pay more.

Hi Esko! If you’ve bought this, then you will always be able to download every part of it, and will receive notifications every time it’s added to if you’ve opted in to DTRPG emails. If you’ve bought this, and DTRPG is not allowing you to download what you’ve bought, please log a ticket with support; I cannot and do not control that.

Per other comments below, this does and will contain all maps from all adventures I publish. Since it was published I’ve been working on DM tools and setting books, so you’re correct that no new adventures (and thus no new adventure maps) have been published or added.

I couldn't agree more. This is not a bundle, however; it's a collection of maps from other adventures.

If you already own all of the adventures that this map pack contains the maps from, there's no reason to purchase this.

hello a few Questions. i see on some of the other post that this have not been added any new maps in like 2 years. so what do you get for lifetime sub . because in general you can add 1 map each 10 year and that dont sound fair, i hope it make sence. and the 10 year is just to say a number. and also you make this in profantasy right ? if so will we get the file for that so we can zoom all in and even add small new stuff if needed. same question to you overland lifetime sub it is alot of money and if we dont get any new stuff i feel it is a little like cheating

Hiya--Thanks for reaching out. Ebon Cartographer is indeed a lifetime adventure maps product, meaning that whenever we publish more adventures, the maps associated automatically get added.

That said, we've been focusing on G/DM tools and campaign setting products the last year or so, hence no new maps.

Rest assured that there is a very deep pipeline of things upcoming... but I'm a one-man shop so I cannot promise strict timelines unfortunately.

I do appreciate that the listing is not cheap, however, I would suggest that "alot of money" is subjective depending on what you're interested in. 1,000 maps for this price equates to 5 cents per professionally-produced battlemap... an absolutely unheard-of value compared to literally every other map pack that I've seen on DTRPG.

That said, the price and product might not be what you're interested in or need, and I respect that.

Hi Earl—Great question; Ebon Cartographer contains everything from all published adventures so if you have those adventures and the atlases, the only reason to grab Ebon Cartographer would be to get the lifetime adventure maps guarantee. But if you already have thenother adventures, it sounds likely that you’d grab future adventures anyway :)

Good question as I certainly didn't make that clear! YES, you can stream campaigns like that using these maps, no problem; just please give IGS credit for the map you're using as part of the stream (you can mention it aloud, and/or have text, whatever's easiest).

The "non-commercial" piece is just to make it clear that you can't just take one of the maps and include it in something you publish like a book or something.

Good question; I don't think that was clear from the description: As I publish more maps that are part of IGS products, I'll simply be adding them to the Ebon Cartographer. You'll receive a notification whenever the product is updated and you'll automatically download them if you have the DTRPG desktop app.

I just picked this up. Is there any move towards changing the naming convention to match the contents of the pdfs?

An example Map 1 Brushgather Farm Overview as in the contents page is actually BF-O.png in the appropriate folder.

Its a very counter intuitive way to label / store them.

A good naming convention I have seen on this site is map 1 is normally labelled 01 BF-O - GM.png and players 01 BF-O - PC.png

That's a good call. Each map is taken from the product/adventure in which it was originally featured; one of the great things about IGS maps is that they're all keyed, so you can search the adventure PDF and quickly get to the map immediately.

The naming convention you describe is actually used in most of the adventures.

Finally, I'd recommend unzipping each map file into its own folder which should make the GM vs. Player aspect of things clear if it's not part of the filenames.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
