Hello Explorers!

Welcome to issue 28 of the Frontier Explorer. In this issue we have a grab bag of articles including more installments of the Things That Go Boom! series, this time on landmines, a new, optional ruleset for combat and actions, a look back at an old Star Frontiers Choose Your Own Adventure book, and a review of a White Star module.

A fun item is this issue is our Create a Character Codex by Aaron O’Brian. This table lets you roll a few dice and get a quick random character concept. Aaron and Brian Phongluangtham went to town drawing a bunch of characters generated from the codex when Aaron first posted. Several of their images are featured with the codex in this issue.

We round out the issue with a look at whips, our regular Jurak Hangna article, and our comics. The full article list is:

  • New Combat Rules and Action Economy
  • Things That Go Boom! 5: Don’t Step on Landmines
  • Evaluating Villains of Volturnus for Canonicity
  • Create a Character Codex
  • Titan Rising: 2299 – Episode 21
  • Peril at the Pod Auction
  • Two Seconds With a Slurker
  • Things That Go Boom! 6: More on Landmines
  • Whip it Good!
  • Escape Plan #6

Grab your copy, sit back, and enjoy. And as always, keep exploring!

The Frontier Explorer is now listed as a “Pay What You Want” product.  As always, the Frontier Explorer is free (and always will be) and you don’t have to feel guilty about just downloading it and enjoying it for free.  Please do.  That said, if you want to help support the magazine, the pay what you want option allows you to make a contribution. Think of it as a “tip jar” or donation plate.  Just don’t feel like you need to make a contribution.  If you want to be a regular supporter, you might consider supporting our Patreon campaign as that not only helps support the magazine, it gets you early access to some of the articles and to each finished issue about a week before it becomes generally available (details on Patreon are in the issue).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
