Feri is a rich world with a shirt-sleeve atmosphere and a balance of available surface water. The system supports a population of 290 million, which makes it too urbanized to make an agricultural world. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Regina Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector and in the Domain of Deneb. Feri, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial knight, a baronet, and the fiefdoms of a baron, and a viscount. All four are members of the Imperial Nobility charged with overseeing the world. This world contains an Imperial Scout Base, capable of handling Scout Service starships and personnel.

Feri is a balkanized world with ten nations currently split into pro Imperial and anti-Imperial factions with one neutral.

Gravity

Feri is a small but dense world but can only manage gravity half that of earths. The locals have managed that by genetic engineering but over the years have tended to be tall and slim. Feri natives can function in higher gravity but will tire easily until their bodies acclimate. There are treatments to accelerate this process and any Ferian travelling off world will begin these in the week before they leave. Off worlders will find their strength and endurance increased but their dexterity will suffer.

Plant life tends to grow tall and fast, the transplanted flora can grow to massive proportions. The only life on the land are insects and like the plants, these are big some as big as terrestrial birds.

The lighter gravity has been an advantage for air transport dirigible or airships being popular for cargo transport and grab transport for local use can be larger and quicker than on world with higher gravity

Climate

Feri has an almost ideal climate for humans, the atmosphere is slightly denser than earth, but it requires no artificial assistance and most people will acclimatise quickly. Feri has a long orbit around its sun taking thirty-two standard years meaning seasons are extremely gradual and stable with eight-year spring, summer, autumn and winter. The average temperature at the equator varies by only four degrees between winter and summer.

In the summer years vast storms race across the equatorial regions of the planet dumping huge amounts of rain by the wintertime these have moved north and south towards the poles bringing snow to the colder regions.

Terrain

The planet is unremarkable and was extensively terraformed in the early days of colonization, seeded with a variety of plant and animal life giving the colonists an eclectic mix of flora and fauna, like a lot of terraformed planets hardy eucalypts and pines make up the bulk of the forests with large areas temperate prairies and colder tundra. Alpine areas tend to be barren and rocky.

Unlike the land, Feris oceans team with native life, none of which is edible to humans and a lot of it is big and dangerous. Aquaculture has been attempted in the past, but most projects ended up with the local sea life taking over again. The oceans for the most part are relatively calm and the lack of a moon means no tidal activity to speak of.

Population

The original colonists came from a mixture of worlds including Earth and Vland with the first colonists arriving around 380 via Regina. Over the next three hundred years there were several waves of settlers. Each group tended to claim its own part of the planet leading to the balkanized world that is Feri today. Over the hundreds of years of settlement, unlike many other worlds, Feri did not unite under one government and the abundant resources enabled each distinct society to flourish. The competition between countries has flared up into conflict in the past but mostly it has helped development rather than hindered it, it is only recently with the push by some countries to leave the Imperium that open warfare has begun between those who want to stay and those who want out. There is a strong republican sentiment amongst the separatists as well as an undercurrent of Solomani nationalism especially in the largest country Central New Swabia (CNS). The CNS population is mostly descended from Germanic colonists from the Solomani Rim and has the largest and most advanced military and industrial infrastructure.

Conflict

Currently there are several military operations with the goal to force the Imperial Aligned countries to capitulate and unite under a republican union. Most militaries on the planet are equipped to tech level 11 using locally produced equipment however there is an increase demand for off world weapons. The nature of warfare at this tech level is such that the use of vast air and ground forces is suicide so battles become a series of hit and run raids, one side will push into territory only to be forced back by attrition. Escalating to a situation of total warfare on a global scale has so far been avoided with conflict being kept to a regional level.

Several off world mercenary units have been employed by both sides to bolster local units and there are multiple training cadres working for arms companies introducing new weaponry to the local troops. The Imperial Interstellar Scout Service (IISS) has shut down orbital and high-altitude operations by seeding low orbit with interdiction satellites to limit the conflict.

The largest military on the planet, the CNS Armed Forces only numbers around ninety thousand so the ability of any country to field a decisive number of troops is limited as is the equipment and personnel to replace combat losses. After two years of fighting most of the fighting is low intensity guerrilla style or limited operations to secure key objectives. There is an abundance of anti-air technology making flying a dangerous pastime, so the extensive use of drones has enabled forces to have airpower on the battlefield while keeping pilots alive.

Grav vehicles were popular with most armies but the lack of point defence technology to negate the advanced missile and anti-aircraft gun technology has kept most of them close to the ground or not operating at all. The terrain on Feri is made up of vast prairie and tundra that although perfectly suited for traditional manoeuvre warfare leaves few hiding places from high tech missile systems. There is a general scramble for bolt on point defence systems by all combatants but nothing effective has been developed locally.

Infantry are using a mixture of caseless ACR and gauss weapons and are protected by combat environment suits with some units transitioning to hard shell and combat armor. Militaries have always been fond of the hovercraft as an armored vehicle on Feri and these are still in wide use with several variants produced locally.

The Imperials have a training and development cadre of three mechanized battalions drawn from the Reginian 4518th Lift Regiment based at the starport but so far they have limited themselves to an advisory role amongst the pro imperial forces, they usually deploy a battalion at a time on critical operations designed to prop up rather than decisively alter the course of any given battle.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
