BYTE Roleplaying Game Rulebook

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The BYTE ROLEPLAYING GAME RULEBOOK has an original d8-based system and comes with 10 technological levels and 20 thematic modules that you can combine in many ways, with each combination creating a different ruleset for a unique world.

The BYTE ROLEPLAYING GAME RULEBOOK allows you to play in any historical era or the worlds of your favorite books, movies, series, or video games: from cowboys to spies, Roman gladiators to mecha pilots, elven knights to vampires, private investigators to galactic rulers, this book provides everything you will need for your game.

The BYTE ROLEPLAYING GAME RULEBOOK also comes with a bonus mini-setting: No Coin for Charon, an open world, sandbox style, modern undead apocalypse game with its own survival and hexcrawl rules. Also, the complete Beta versions of the first two standalone setting books—Ashes of the Heavens and Yeraksys: Dying World—can now be downloaded for free from the following links:

Ashes of the Heavens BYTE RPG Setting Beta Version - Abascanto Press | DriveThruRPG.com

Yeraksys: Dying World BYTE RPG Setting Beta Version - Abascanto Press | DriveThruRPG.com

If you are still on the fence about purchasing the BYTE Roleplaying Game Rulebook, you may want to check out its Quickstart Rules document first, which offers a detailed look at its rules mechanisms:

Two more questions:
1: How many of the specialized d8 do you suggest each player have handy?
2: Do you sell them?

Hi there!
1. I would say 5 for the GM and 5 for the rest of the players, collectively.
2. That was the original plan, but I dropped it before the start of the crowdfunding campaign for logistical reasons. I also looked into making 3d printer files of custom d8s and giving them for free to backers/buyers, but I've found out 3d-printed dice tend to be very unbalanced, so I dropped that idea too.
I've been mainly playing online (Roll20, where you can easily set up the custom d8 rolls by using lists and macros), but, in my experience, new players tend to get a grip on the game and automatically "see" eights as zeroes before the first session ends. There are also online stores where you can order all sorts of custom dice.
Cheers!

Will there be any open license for publishers? OGL, SRD, CC, or something else?

Hi, there! I've yet to create a document with guidelines on the subject, but I could write one down if there are people interested in publishing stuff for the BYTE RPG. Right now, I think that having an OGL in place would be a win-win situation for everybody involved. If anyone has suggestions on the matter, please send me an e-mail and I'll try to come up with something useful. Cheers!

Great to know you're at least open to the idea!
Personally, my products are mostly released under the Creative Commons Attribution Sharealike license, but I've published under the OGL before, too.
I may be in touch!

Are there any plans to make a Roll20 character sheet for this system? I am super interested in it, but I am only investing in game systems that have a Roll20 character sheet during the pandemic.

Maybe I missed it, but I can't find this info here or on the Kickstarter. This is a mix and match / pick and choose set of rules, so it sounds very attractive to me. But is it organized in such a way (in the PDF) that I can easily print out a specific set of chapters for my players to see? Just basic info that they will need as players so they don't have to weed through everything. Essentially all this question amounts to is this:
a) Do chapters always start on a new page?
b) Do any chapters contain overlapping information for both the GM and players? (this might be OK in player creation or basic game mechanics for example, but perhaps not for a lot of other information)
Or maybe my assumptions about the organization of this book are completely wrong. If so it would be really nice to see samples from a lot more of it, perhaps at least a page or two from every chapter / section. Perhaps a complete chapter, the table of contents, index, etc.

Hi! I will try to answer your questions the best that I can:
a) Yes, every single one of the 20 chapter-modules starts on a new "cover" page that tells players which tech levels and BYTE RPG settings it is associated with. Still, some of the large thematic chapters (such as the one about Spellcraft) may contain optional rules that GMs may not want to incorporate into their game - these optional rules usually come in subchapters that (while not starting in a new page) are clearly indicated by a new heading (which, likewise, also informs GM and players about the tech levels and BYTE RPG settings it pertains to).
b) Except for its appendix (that contains the No Coin for Charon setting), the book doesn't have GM-exclusive info. That being said, chapters may contain rules that aren't essential for players as they don't deal with character creation, such as how to resolve a car chase or to randomly generate a grid for a space battle that is about to take place.
I was keen on making a preview...See more

Is there going to be POD version of this book? It looks like something me and my group might find interesting but PDF's are tedious to read.

Printing Disabled!?!? Just about NOBODY does this! There are some of us who like to have a hardcopy and who, like you, don't live in the US or UK and, therefore, don't want either wait months or pay extortionate shipping for Print on Demand.

Not impressed ... wouldn't have backed it if I'd known that you were going to do this!

Hi there! Thank you for your purchase. No, it is not by design. We are updating the PDF later today, bumping up its resolution, which should fix this problem. All of our art is on 300 dpis files, the standard quality for printing, so we won't have any problems doing that. The update will also include a new NPC, two new illustrations, and some small fixes.

what Preview are you looking at because page 144 is "Money and Equipment" .. The only Superpowers I saw in the preview had to do with Mutations? ... so not sure on superpowers Curt.

Hi! Our approach to the superheroes genre is to give players optional rules to make their "heroic" characters "superheroic" with two different levels of power. There's a short list of super powers that they also can get, but they will basically be more competent with those abilities from the thematic modules applicable to the setting (spellcraft, mutations, cybernetics, etc), besides quite possibly more harder to kill. So, "superpowers" are not a thematic module per se, but a set of optional rules that players may choose to incorporate in their settings when running games of this genre.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
