In 1095, Pope Urban II called on the kings and knights of Europe to liberate the Holy Land in a great crusade. As one they lifted their voices to Heaven, crying deus vult - God wills it! This cry was taken up by thousands of knights and peasants, martyrs and madmen, as a great tide of righteous fury flooded across the world.

This cry was heard in the shadows, too. Since the days of the apostles, a secret order of warrior monks guarded the church and protected Christendom from all enemies, both natural and supernatural. Trained from birth and equipped with lost secrets of ancient civilisations, this secret order also hears the call to crusade. Deus vult - God will it, and they are the instruments of His divine Will.

It is the closing years of the twelfth century. Saladin has reconquered the Kingdom of Jerusalem, and the holy city is once more in the hands of the Saracen. Heresies and sorcery rot Europe from within, while the nobles quarrel and bicker. Even the church is falling prey to this corruption. The world must be saved, through any means necessary. No enemy, no sorcery, no doubt and no fear will prevent the monks of the Order from carrying out the Will of God. Deus Vult!

Ok so this is a weird thing to bring up for an 8 year old game but deus vault the phrase not this specific game has become a white supremacist dog whistle. Is there any chance the tittle could be changed to not be a dog whistle?

I agree, it is a very weird thing to bring up. We could respect and learn from history, or we could just rewrite all of the parts we don't particularly like. Here's an idea, we could change the name of a historical-inspired game to suit the delicate sensibilities of the moment.

Yeah that is weird, and frankly a bit censorious. The fact that this book takes its name from a rallying cry during one of the bloodiest religious invasions in history can itself be used as a refutation of the dog whistle point.

I lean more towards, "Screw those Nazi assholes, they don't get to just keep taking stuff from the cultural commons." Context matters, and the game already clearly highlights the negative connotations of the original context as well. If Mongoose had done anything that warrant suspicion of being ideological White Supremacists who were dog-whistling with the game, that would be a different matter, but if they had I expect we'd have heard of it by now.

i mean this is a setting that pits christians against muslims-- an invading, corrupting force that must be corrected "through any means necessary." i think we're well beyond dogwhistling at this point.

is there historical precedent? sure, but does that change whether or not this is rooted in white supremacy? it's real easy to keep questions like this at arms length because you can point to a moment in history where it happened, but this is also a game where grappling hooks, climbing claws and a clockwork head that you can consult with questions of the occult are a part of your character's arsenal.
