Lost Laboratory of Kwalish (5e)

Watermarked PDF

Lost Laboratory of Kwalish explores an alternate expedition into the Barrier Peaks. The legendary inventor disappeared in the peaks eons ago… as it turns out, finding a crashed planar ship and studying its technology to fuel his own experiments—only now, Kwalish’s lost research is desperately needed!

For characters 5th-10th level.

This adventure explores two locations within the Barrier Peaks, and includes new monsters, magic items, and spells, plus sci-fi trinkets, random encounters, and even rumors of the area submitted by the player community! Further featuring new art, maps (from Claudio Pozas), and even a cartoon (from Jason Thompson)—as well as the famed suit of powered armor, as edited by Jeremy Crawford on the Dragon+ livestream!

Best of all, all monies that Wizards of the Coast receives from sales of this PDF are donated to Extra Life. Your purchase of this adventure goes to a truly great cause!

In addition, we were honored to include some content designed with Laurence Withey in this adventure. We hope the material presented brings his character – the wizard Galder – to D&D tables around the world. For more on Galder, please visit the article on

I'm having trouble reconciling the map on p. 21 with those on pp. 31 and 32. They are very different, but seem to share the same key. What am I missing?

I could say that's because there are numerous false maps that have made their way out of Daoine Gloine through the years (one of which may find its way into the hands of the characters), but in order to better reconcile the two, please swap #4 and 5 in either version of the map.

And when running Daoine Gloine, you may also have the characters approach from any angle, and may choose to place the baubles anywhere throughout the city.

I just read about this over at the Greyhawk forum at The Piazza:

The sidebar in the preview makes this look like it's meant to be a Forgotten Realms reboot.

Is that the case, or are there any notes (not in the preview) for using it in it's original campaign setting?

Our general approach was to not recreate the original Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, but provide an "alternative" take in the spirit of the original adventure (maybe this is the same crashed ship from the original, maybe it's a different ship altogether). So while we did want to refer to the Barrier Peaks, we also tried to include sidebar/notes on pgs. 2-3 for where such mysterious peaks might exist in multiple settings: Greyhawk, as well as the Forgotten Realms or even Ravnica (especially considering the recent releases of Waterdeep: Dragon Heists, Dungeon of the Mad Mage, and Guildmasters' Guide to Ravnica).

i feel like the description should add in the information about Galder, and the player who made him, thats also featured in this adventure. i think it would go a long way to encouraging people to purchase it.

when i saw this product the other day i glanced past it, now that i've read a different article about Galder, i plan on purchasing this product to contribute to immortalizing the player responsible for the character.

Any chance of this becoming legal for Adventurers’ League?

While the adventure was not designed using the Adventurers League template/format, I would certainly love if there was a way for us to make it legal for AL play down the road.

A few comments / questions:

1) How do you pronounce "Daoine Gloine"?

2) Was Gloine originally a yuan-ti medusa? If not, what's with the snake body?

3) Surely Kwalish should be an archmage at the very least. Evoker doesn't seem powerful enough for some of the things he's supposed to have done in the past (like creating gates to other planes and capturing a mind flayer arcanist and the like).

4) Levels 5 to 10 is a broad range. This adventure seems like it might be a little on the hard side for 5th level but too easy for 10th level. Some guidance on adjusting the encounters depending on level (like is standard in AL modules) would be much appreciated.

First and foremost, thank you for purchasing the adventure and supporting Extra Life/Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals! As for your questions:

1. I have it in mind myself as “day-oh-een glow-een”. That said, the name (and several others) comes from a mishmash of Irish, so a more real-world pronunciation would technically be: Daoine ( Gloine (

2. As a unique version of a medusa, we also played around with Gloine- Gloine’s visual style (and thanks to Shawn Wood for his rendition!). We chose a more “Clash of the Titans” body-type (as opposed to the fifth edition Monster Manual style) in part to create an even more striking undead form.

3. At this point, Kwalish might even be on his way to demi-god status (he still is, after all, angling to become the next Ioun)! Still, we went with evoker for a little more level balance, along with the suggestion that if things descend into combat,...See more

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
