Basic Back to the Dungeon RPG Player's Guide
by Timothy P. F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/12/2022 08:24:12

This is a very nice basic easy to pick up and play version of the old game. In a previous version of Eldrad's game, I complained to him that it was not well enough edited. It seems that Eldrad took my advice, got a team together to make something polished and it shows.

This is by no means flashy and there is no pen and ink other than a rough hand drawn picture for the cover. But that is exactly the point.

It is intended to be a lose set of rules that allows game masters to make rulings in the old gaming style and you are not also hit over the head with an encyclopedia of descriptions of a world setting.

I would likely add information about the height and age of the various races. It's unclear if it is a section missed when you edited it or whether players are supposed to make it up. I'd even venture to leave it out if you don't define things there in the rules - enough to give a brief description of elves and how they live much longer than the other races.

So for 40 pages it does what it sets out to do.

Why thank you for the kind review! I am glad that you "get" exactly what I was trying to do with this neoclone! I hope that you also downloaded the GM's Guide as well and the BS1 Module. Easy to play and easy to run! I just think that the Game Master's job should be Made as easy as it can be and there is no need for a fully stated out charter sheet for a monster. I believe that the characters should have a tiny bit of crunch but they should only have to look on their sheet and not have to look them up in a book every few minutes. My ideal in gaming is to play the worlds, not the rules. To have everyone have that feeling I had back in 1981 when I played my first Basic D&D game.

Basic Back to the Dungeon Game Master's Guide

If you are a fan of the old-school approach to gaming, get this. Matter of fact, get the bundle. If the rest of his work is this good, it's well worth the token price of 25 bucks.

You can tell this was a labor of love. It shows on every page. I don't mean to gush. No, I've never met the author and no, he isn't paying me to say nice things.

I've just read a LOT of clones, old-school inspired rulesets, and other gaming material and become bored by 90% of it. There's no excitement behind it. But this book is packed with the same unbridled eagerness we all felt when we unboxed our first D&D set. Endless possibilities.

I'll shutup now. Just get it. Then give this man some money and buy the bundle to show your appreciation.

Ah bless you! You will enjoy once again how simple and easy it is to run a game as I made it easy (and fast) as possible for the Game Master to in a game. You can totally create megadungeons and handle groups of 10+ people without flinching (preroll initiative I suggest). For the player, it's just a little more complicated that the old B/X stuff. My modules for "The Little Barony" are ready for adventure and the dreaded Black Stairs Megadungeon is awaiting their weal or woe!

The Ruined World: Beaor the City of the Bear
by karen s. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/06/2019 14:37:08

Somewhat better than "Kievaria". More details, better description of locations. Though would still like better drawn map (it looks like it was quickly sketched on the back of an envelope) And some details about the people (individuals, what the shops might be like, what businesses are there.....) But at least the locales are better described, with a touch of the past history (lava flows and flooding).

Follow up: having read Eldrad's response, this is a works in progress, which explains the lack of details I was expected. Good luck Eldrad. While I'm not running the system you're designing for, I do check out other locations to help get ideas for the games I run. So I will keep watching.....

You will see each setting get more detailed over time as well as better drawn maps. This was a test to see how people would react to a minimalist setting. Your input was invaluable and I promise that there will be more detail in the future. My employment takes up most of my time but I shall be expanding this world and it will be in a larger document in the future. This is all a growing setting for the Adventure's Guild Unlimited which will be a RAW alternative to the AL if I can get it started.

The Ruined Wold: Kieveria the Untouched City
by karen s. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/27/2019 23:15:25

What is written in the descriptive blurb is all there is. And includes more detail than the pdf. The 8 pages consist of the cover (which is intriguing, and suggests an interesting adventure or environ within); a sketchy hand drawn map; one page describing Towers, slums and farmland (roughly 1-2 short paragraphs each) - and 5 pages of licensing info. No details, no idea why bridges have never been breached (they're fortresses? Fortresses have been breached, what makes these different?) And why would anyone want to? There's nothing interesting in Kievaria. Very disappointing.

Graphic Novel Freeform Supers Role Playing Game
by A customer [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/27/2017 07:32:51

I can say this about Graphic Novel Freeform Supers Role Playing Game (GBFSRPG): it gives you what it promises. Players create the character they envision without making a single die role or performing any math. You describe what your character looks like, what their origin is, what they can do, what they carry and KAPOW, you're ready to play. The closet thing this game has to a stat is their Destiny Pool (more on that in a moment.)

The game uses a d20 so there is a random element. However, there are no charts to be found in the book and, again, no math to be done. We are told that a 1 is a failure of some sort and a 20 is a success of some sort. Other than that, you're on your own for figuring out success and failure.

How does that work? It works by rembering that success and failure can mean lots of things. Let's say that you have described your character as having super strength, and you are called on to lift up a train. You roll a 2. Does that mean your strength quit on you? Maybe, but t can also mean the train breaks as you lift it up, Maybe you hoist it, but you are unbalanced and you fall over. By all means get creative!

Likewise there is no damage stat. There is a progressive list of levels of injury, but again the real power is in the description. A flying character might be able to cope with a broken leg, but how would that same character do if their injury was a concussion?

What if you don't like the roll you made? That is where the Destiny Pool comes in. Spend a point from the pool, roll again and hope you like the new result better. This adds a bit of strategy to the game. On the one hand, using Destiny points can be helpful, on the other hand maybe you can describe a failure in such a way that you can live with it and thus save your points.

A team of players who know and trust each other and enjoy thinking on the fly could have a lot of fun with this game. Another apporpriate setting would be at a convention, where everyone can let go and throw themselves in, remembering that this is a one-time deal and they probably won't see this group again. I would not, however, recommend it for a new group where the players are just beginning to get to know each other or for players who aren't inclined towards a minimalist system.

As a side note, there were several misspellings and word misuses in the rulebook. One of the most amusing was in the list of potential hero types. The author refers to an inanimate object brought to life as a "Golumn." I am almost certain that the author meant to say "Golem." If the author decides to make a second dition, a bit of editting would definitely be appropriate.

I cannot thank you enough for your great review! I will be working on a updated version soon and possibly a few more pages of rules.

There is now a version with Hit Points and it works really great! So if you want some Freeform numberless or with hit points, you can do both!

I went back to a more simplified version that works far better that any other where ONLY the player rolls a D20!

Thanks for the review. I will attempt to make it better. There is not actually "world building" but a guide on how cities are structured in DUNGEONPUNK so you can make your own. I will try and clarify this in the next version. Did you take a look at the first DUNGEONPUNK PDF? Please do.

After a first reading of this DM and the Player guide too, I think that is one of the most beautiful, well written and complete products of this kind...and in these days I'm reading a lot of them! I put it in my Top 5 of its niche. I could say more after a "field" test :)

Thank you! It has been done as my old school house rules and just as a labor of love! I wanted to make a set of simple rules for a Game Master to just freely create. It runs like an old school game and is made to handle large groups of players, NPCs, and monsters. I am trying to bring back the expeditionary campaigns of old! Please share my rules with friends!
