Bots ‘n Pieces, the draw your own robot TTRPG! - QuickStart
by Paul [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/08/2023 10:58:46

Bots 'n Pieces is a great light hearted RPG system. The rules are straight forward and play well, with scope for some an unexpected level of tension as action dice are slowly but surely used up. The post-biological moon game setting of Tartaria is nicely presented. And there is loads of scope for mad creativity in character creation and resolving challenges - i've never seen an opponent therapied into submission before but somehow in Bots 'n Pieces it seemed to make sense! 5AE Legacy

It feels like a lot of effort has gone into this product. I enjoyed the evolution of the 'races' in this book 'genus'. My favourites were the Homullus and Hollow.

I'm looking forward to giving it all a try! The 'Multi-classing' isn't a thing, but it's the closest approximation to the character building, and it looks fun and allows for some cool builds to be made! Overall 4.5 rounded up to 5 :D

5AE Legacy

It was the front cover that drew me in, its vibrant and bold colours/print stood out. The game was very different from what I expected, in the right way! I thought it would be another 5E homebrew clone mess, but now I see where the name comes means, the link is within the world, as the mechanics as very different to the actual gameplay. The set adventure was entertaining to read through; I love an excellent detective story :D. Overall I would rate this as an interesting take on the 5E universe :)

This is a really intersting take on an altered 5E system. The magic system was really creative and that's the biggest part of this. The write ups on the races were really cool also, I like how they seemed like an evolved human or orc, etc, and not just a new race for the sake of it.

This game was so fun to play! It shines a whole new light on multi-classes and magic machanics. Imagination and science really come into play in this game, rewarding the brave and creative.

5AE Legacy

This is an interesting game, but calling it a logical evolution of the 5E rules is a stretch. Any remnants of 5E are barely recognizable; that's not necessarily a bad thing as 5E isn't my personal cup of tea, but I think folks will be better off judging this product as a distinct new ruleset of its own rather than coming into it with preconceived notions based on their knowledge of 5E.

What's different about 5AE and 5E when it comes to rules? Just about everything - 5AE has no classes, no levels, a Death Funnel-style character creation system, an extremely lightweight character advancement system (even calling it a 'system' feels like an overstatement), no STR or CHA stats (replaced by EXP - Expertise, basically a weapon skill stat, and MAG - Magus, a stat tied to the new magic system), a different Alignment system, a completely different numeric scale for your stats, new races (called Genus here), a new combat system, a new freeform magic system, a talent system that feels kind of similar to Feats, changes to Advantage/Disavantage, and probably a few other things I missed.

Calling this an evolution of 5E rules is like calling Apocalypse World the logical evolution of 1st Edition D&D - true in the strictest technical sense in that 1E is the earliest common ancestor, but not a very useful comparison for someone interested in learning about Apocalypse World. That said, the 5AE rules are interesting and I'm excited to test them out at the table, the new magic system in particular.

Re: the setting/fluff, I enjoyed it a lot. Very cool world-building and unique concepts for a fantasy setting; if anything, THIS feels like where the 'evolution' occurred, as it feels like a 5E fantasy world that has (mostly) naturally evolved over a great span of time into it's current fantasy-futuristic state. The write-ups for the Genuses (Genusi?) are great and provide a lot of flavor to the world. The only minor quibble is that the writing style is a little inconsistent; in most places it's quite good, but in a few it scans a little weird, as if you're reading what was once a list of bullet points that was converted into paragraph form. Nothing that couldn't be fixed by another editing pass over the rough patches though.

Well worth a look, especially if you're aching for something different in a fantasy setting, just be sure to go into it ready to treat 5AE as its own game. 3.75 rounded up to 4, I'll update the score once I get some actual play under my belt.

Hey Chad, thanks for the constructive review, you've made some really good, clear points, some of which I just wanted to write up in case it was my wording within the book that created some issues. 5E is the base I used to start, as you mentioned the evolution occurs within the world I built, and you'd be correct in pointing this out. With the evolution of the world, some mechanics have also evolved with time. Taken from the book 'We like to think with a basic understanding of 5E you should be able to pick up this new system fairly easily. I hope you enjoy playing out some games. let me know what you think after some game time, I'm interested to hear your thoughts
