Sewer Map Set 1
by Jeffrey J. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 08/14/2010 07:25:41

Sewers are a classic urban adventuring destination (where else are the giant rats going to live?) and these four 8x10 tiles can fit together in a variety of ways to give you a backdrop for your rat-hunting. They feature an entry chamber (with ladder on the wall), a T-intersection (with wooden footbridge), an offset passage, and a section where the sewer tunnel narrows, featuring a side room. The tiles are mostly devoid of "dressing".

I have two big complaints about this set: first, the walls are done in a dark green, as is the sewer water, which makes them difficult to tell apart at a glance, especially when they are right next to each other. Second, the grid lines are stark white, making them so visible they distract from the tiles. I think they make the wall/water problem worse as they break up the drop shadows that give the walls the illusion of height - I don't have the problem on the sample maps on the front cover.

Derelict Alien Starships Sample
by Michael G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/08/2010 13:01:22

Generic geomorphic map, but i like the fact that it can be used as a setting for an alien derelict spaceship. Can't fault it on price. I'd recommend this just for the fact that you can mix and match the tile setup.

I cant really knock this product because i love full color pictures of the worlds that the players encounter. Someone took a lot of time and care creating these images and i think they add color to any campaign.

Dragonfly Class Bulk Transport Deckplans/RPG Battle Maps
by Jason S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/22/2010 16:20:19

I bought this product in a bundle with several more ships from Wydraz. I have to say these have added a great deal to my Star Wars SAGA game. First off the maps are gorgeous with amazing detail.

I use the Dragonfly maps for cargo ships which works perfect. Some of the things I really like about this product is that the maps are wide so it maximized paper space. Second I really like that they put the outline of the outership underneath the interior map. This helps a lot if your characters have to do the occasional space walk outside the ship.

Likes: Gorgeous maps with great detail, thoughtful layout and interesting design

Dislikes: None really. If I reach for one I'd say that I would have like greater diversity of extra objects added (crates, barrels etc.) but as these were a surprise at the back of the product I wont complain.

Hornet: Engine/Cargo Module
by Stuart R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 06/11/2010 22:35:46

A nice free battlemat of a spaceship cargo hold. The map uses 3D models and photorealistic textures for many of the accessories like the engine, while using more basic shapes for walls and doors. My personal taste would be for a more consistent style, either photorealistic or basic shapes, to improved the overall effect - although that might not be as much of an issue when printed. At any rate the price ($0) is certainly right, and I'm sure this will be helpful for many scifi gamers.

Starship Deckplans/Battlemaps [BUNDLE]
by Jason S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/05/2010 12:54:47

I picked up the bundle that included the Hornet, Endurance, Alien ship and Dragonfly to use in my Star Wars SAGA game. These maps are brilliant! I love the look of them and how each is distinct from the other. As such you have a different feel for each ship.

I printed them out on photo paper and plan on lamenting them for continued use.

Likes: The differing look of each ship.

Dislikes: If I were to dig for something, I'd say I would have liked more bits and pieces that could be used to further individualize the maps. At the end of the pdf there are some cut out crates and boxes, extra computer terminals, generators or air locks would have been great too.

Zenmidar Island Adventure Map
by Christopher H. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 05/22/2010 14:50:04

If you need an island to drop into your fantasy campaign world, you can save yourself some time and effort by dropping less than a dollar on this map set. You get several different maps, though note that all of them are the same island in the same scale. There are no detailed maps, though the "Known Map" suggests a few locations (including one whose name, apparently intended to be "Gilded Reef," appears to be misspelled). The "Secrets Map" offers a few more suggested locations, for the DM's eyes only. No adventure hooks or anything like that are provided. The suggested locations are uninspired, stereotypical, almost cliché—"Crab Beach," "Orc Wood," "Fey Forest," "Goblin Village," "Mermaid Bay," "Dragon's Den," "Sorcerer's Tower." Then again, the product only costs $0.89. The biggest weakness is the cartographer's failure to indicate any scale for the maps, though the transition from plain to tundra is suggestive. Take a look at the single grayscale map provided as a free sample version before you buy, so that you can preview what you'll get.

Zenmidar Island Adventure Map (Sample)
by Mark S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/12/2010 23:11:46

Picture shows a color map. Download is a black and white map which dispenses with such silly optional things as...place names. You wanted to get my attention as a consumer, but what you did was annoy me.

Free...and worth the price.

If you read the description, you would have realized this was ONE of several maps available in the full version. The B/W map for this version does show the possibilities of the other maps with a color window.

Subterra: The Underground City
by Peter I. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 11/26/2009 07:36:16

Many gamers will fondly remember the classic 1e adventures that took the characters into the depths of the underdark, there to face dangers uncertain, new fantastic races like the drow, and a world beyond what they'd encountered so far. Many gamers also have a general fondness for underdark adventures, be it because of the dark nature of these adventures, the horrible dangers, the strange and terrific creatures or a multitude of other reasons. Subterra: The Underground City is a 56 page pdf product that makes the underdark far more accessible by presenting a fairly civilised city that can be used as a base of operations. This product details all aspects of Subterra, including politics, environs, races and city details. This product is setting neutral, meaning that it can be inserted into any campaign setting, although it does have a slight d20 OGL slant to it.

Subterra: The Underground City comes as a single pdf file that's adequately presented with no real effort having gone into the layout and design of the pdf. Artwork is present, but fairly rudimentary, and nothing that stands out amongst a small host of filler images. The maps are clear and fairly well done, though they too don't really capture the feel of the city. I guess that's one of the main issues with the product - while the design is lacklustre, the content is too in many ways, meaning that you never get a feel for the mood, character and atmosphere of the city. So much time is spent detailing various aspects of the city that the real character of the city is lost and the atmosphere dwindles away. Writing and editing is fair, but overall, a little touching up would make the product far more presentable and professional.

Subterra, the City of Shadows and Magic, is a large underground city stationed along a well known and well trodden underground traveller's route. It's a city that's guided mostly by its own rules, and controlled by the power of the various guilds that run the city. This product details all aspects of the city, from the politics and various factions, the guilds and their relationships to one another, the deities of Subterra, the various races present and their relationships with another, and a detailed city map with a legend entry on pretty much every building in the city. There's a lot to work with here in creating an exciting adventure or base, and the product even provides a bunch of useful adventure hooks and ideas to get you started in the city of Subterra.

By and large I enjoyed reading the material presented in this product, with some interesting ideas, concepts and thoughts to work with an craft into adventures. On the down side, though, it reads very much like a text book rather than creating an atmospheric city that oozes with life. I think that's a fault of both the content as well as the design, and would've like to see something with so much potential really come to life. While the major players and guilds in the city are described, they too lacked the personality that would make this product work better. Very little is said about the motivations of the major players in the city. Which also brings me to my second complaint about this product - there's nothing terribly unique about it. It just another city filled with semi-lawless orcs, humans, goblins and other sentient races all trying to get the most power or monetary gain out of the city and its inhabitants. While there are some glimmers of interesting aspects in the city such as mana quakes and other features, it's very much an above ground lawless city that's placed underground. I would've liked to see things that make this more a city that has to be underground, rather than above ground.

While I've said a number of negative things about this product, I think it's still got a lot of potential. It won't take too much to convert the text-book like format into a city that has a little more life, purpose and presence in the larger world. If you treat this product as a bare minimum base, then there's plenty to build on to create something truly unique. I liked some of the adventure ideas, and the interactions between the guilds have some good things going for them. And, with a legend for hundreds of buildings in the overall map, there's plenty to add on or expand with. Overall, the product offers an interesting look at an underground city with some glimpses of good material that can make the city unique and something worth remembering.
