Multiverse Kit - Part 4 - Life
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 01/27/2013 10:29:03

This is a thought-provoking resource aimed at helping the most inventive world-builders design their own sentient lifeforms with which to populate their universe. Quite a tall order, especially in under 50 pages!

It all depends, of course, on your universe. If you tend to the concept put forward by EE 'Doc' Smith in his Lensman series that the majority of life in the universe was 'seeded' by one ancient race (Arisians, in his case) they are all going to be similar and characters in it are likely to be of this dominant type. Yet even there, there were several varieties, not everyone was 'human' in appearance although the majority were. Others hold that virtually any kind of lifeform, given the opportunity, might develop to the extent of becoming sentient - if that appeals, try James White's Sector General series: he is equally brilliant at dreaming up exotic races and finding things to go wrong with them!

Here you have the tools for designing sentient races from the bottom up, beginning with deciding what sort of lifeform they developed from, then adding in a range of options from numbers of limbs and digits to psychological characteristics. A word of warning, even if you just grab a handful of dice and go straight through the tables rolling furiously, creature creation is not a speedy process - you won't be doing this mid-game to populate the generation ship your characters have just encountered!

What you do get, though, are lots of thought-provoking suggestions to chew over. You may need to remind yourself to stop designing your sentient race and write an adventure.

If you find the process intriging, delve into some of the extremes of earth biology and the speculations rife amongst such as NASA astrobiologists, watch the Discovery Channel or equivalent.. and don't forget science fiction. Plenty of authors are good at coming up with unusual races and societies, and you can mine them for inspiration... but this work is a good starting point and shows you clearly what you will need to consider!

50 Pre-generated Planet Details
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 01/21/2013 11:13:06

This is a fine collection of planets with all the astronomical and astrophysical data that a typical survey would return, provided for you in a nice orderly manner - just the thing when your characters abandon the starport and decide to go on a wander around the galactic neighbourhood without warning!

Created using the random generation tables already published by Ennead Games, they read well. There are occasional anomalies but finding out an explanation for them can often result in something far more interesting than an instrument survey.

Top marks to the publisher who, after I posted a review praising the contents but commenting adversely on the layout and some stray links (to their own planet-generation software routine!) that had been left in but didn't work, laid out the complete product in a far clearer and user-friendly style!

100 Germanic Sounding Names
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 01/21/2013 05:34:46

Coming up with lots of names can be a chore, and quite a strain on the imagination even if you have lots of time at your disposal, so the plethora of 'Name' lists available can come in very handy!

This one provides 'Germanic-sounding' names, the sort of thing that can come in handy in virtually any genre of game - certainly contemporary ones where there might be German citizens around, or somewhere in the far future where you might encounter their descendants. There are also applications for Wild West games (historical or alternate history), pulp and steampunk, even fantasy if you have gone the cod-mediaeval Europe route. They'd be good for 7th Sea as well, as there is a not-Germany (Freiburg) region, and for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying.

The list provides an hundred complete names - first & last name - and you can roll or pick those that take your fancy. Male and female first names are both included, so if you have a need for a particular gender you might have to roll more than once until you get a suitable name for the NPC or character you are creating.

100 Planet Aspects & Quirks
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 01/10/2013 11:02:53

Herein is a fascinating collection of little snippets of information to aid the design process. Some might spawn a whole adventure, they might make the difference between the characters deciding to go there or choosing another destination...

The option of rolling a d100 is there, but unless you start with this product you may get a result completely incompatible with other data you have on the planet you are developing. Now, that might make for a really intriguing planet... but unless you are able to come up with a rationale for why things are the way they are, it may be best to roll again or just pick something more suitable. You may prefer to read through and select appropriate aspects instead.

Quite a lot of the quirks are planetological in nature and characters undertaking surveying duties might be called upon to investigate and explain. Indeed the majority of the entries are suitable subjects for investigation, and hence possible topics for adventure.

If you enjoy designing planets to populate your universe, this will be a useful resource to have to hand. Just remember that some planets are really dull and predictable, not every one will have one of these quirks!

100 Arabic Sounding Names
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 12/27/2012 08:02:50

A nicely-presented and handy list of 'Arabic-sounding' names to use when adding a touch of the exotic to your character or your campaign world.

They are quite jumbled, so hopefully you know that Faisal is a boy's name and most Farah's are girls.. and whilst suitable for one-off characters you'll need to learn how Arabic family names work, or come up with your own system when constructing family trees.

Still, useful when you are in need of a name redolant of the middle east in a hurry, especially when you tire of a string of characters called Attef after that waiter you met in Egypt several years ago :)

Right, roll the bones... Ibrahim ibn Smadir ready for adventure! Sounds good, and I think I can pronounce that one convincingly and consistently too, a bit of a bonus....

Thanks for the feedback - I was going to put in the rules about arabic type names compared to say, English ones, but didn't want to complicate things too much. Glad you like it

Tavern Kit - Part 1 : Names & Symbols
by Benjamin M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/28/2012 08:36:45

For the price it is a very nice set of lists and idea's on how to combine them to make inn and tavern names. They also point out that many in the time period historiclly could not read and the sign would be a symbolic form of the name so it could be reconized with out being read. They also suggest that sign's could have stayed the same and the taven or inn could have chaged names for any number of reasons, any of which could for GM lead to an adventure hook or back story to add to their campain.

101 Fantasy Jobs & Professions
by Andrew P. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/09/2012 19:13:46

Spelling and overall editing are atrocious but you get what you pay for. Even so, I'm mentioning it here (even though most of the other reviewers also mentioned it) because it really, really made me think twice before I bought any other 101-X products. (I don't remember, but I think there was a sale that convinced me to give them a shot. Point being: I'd have willingly paid a dollar more for the other product had the free version been up to professional standards.

I also question the organization. Alphabetical is not necessarily the most intuitive or useful reference. If you re-do it, I'd suggest at least considering grouping them by socio-economic level Peasants, Skilled Tradesmen, Academic/Educated, Aristocracy&Retinue. Maybe? I dunno. It just seems like if I'm in a poor town (or poor side of town), I'm more likely to run into peasant-types like Builders and Butchers and more likely to encounter Blacksmiths and Brewers in a middle-class area.

Final suggestion: Use a different font, one legible at a smaller size. You get points for “authenticity” but it's a challenging typeface to scan and the text isn't really written with block reading in mind. Likewise, there's not enough content to justify printing out 10 pages, but if f I read through it on-screen, I have to do a lot of unnecessary scrolling.

It's just a list. I didn't find it useful. If there were descriptions of the locations, and perhaps how they may be linked together, the document would make a helpful DM's resource.
