d66 Adventure
by Daniel V. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/05/2019 12:56:10

Very disapointing.

Basically uses 2d6 like a poorman's d100.

Only the first two ranks of wizardry have their spells listed. If you want more spells, you'll have to make them yourself.

No bestiary, no magic items.

d66 Adventure
by Stephen Y. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/22/2018 15:00:25

At 17 pages, 16 are the conent. Artwork: the same as other products from NRP (black & white).

Your character has 5 stats (abilities): Might (Str), Mind (Int), Move (Speed), Body (Con), Spirit (a mixture of charisma, wisdom and spiritual strength). A number of D6's are assigned to each of the above depending on 'Kin' as they call it (species/race), which are Dwarf, Elf, Human, Halfling. Humans have 4 on each stat. The total of each roll is put on each stat.

Combat: Melee attack is a Might check (45+Move). A ranged attack is a Move check (45+Move+size mod). P12 mentions preparing cards (encounter cards, etc) I expect for each location.

Damage: The weapon's damage dice, and add the attacker's Might/5. Subtract the defender's Body/5 and armour. The result, if positive, is recorded as a wound.

No character sheet. No bestiary = Not good. 2 supplements (advanced adventurers fighter and dwarf), are £1.45/$1.95 each.

The game does appear to be miniatures/map based.

At £4.55 (£1.53)/$5.95 ($2.00), sale in brackets; it's partly ok.

Universal Adventures Dungeon Deck

THIS and all the other sets of cards in this line, are a GREAT resource. I have been using TSR's CARD MASTER since 1993; and this line is an EXCELLENT replacement. I especially love the work put in to make actual objectives in the Modules a little further down the line.

Game Master’s Guide to Friends
by Patrick H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/28/2016 18:39:10

If you're a brand new GM with no idea how to build interesting characters, this might be of use, but it's extremely basic information, and not much of it. There's only 8 pages of content here, and even then there's a fair amount of whitespace. I just can't endorse paying money for this product.

Swords and Savagery Monsters
by Stephen Y. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/29/2016 05:54:02

At 23 pages, 22 are the content. There is no content list of monsters at the front, or index at the back (as some books do). This is basically a bestiary for Swords & Savagery.

The usual B&W art seen throughout the other books.

Therea are 5 pages of monster abilities.

Some monsters have 'varieties' (different types of Goblins & Orcs for example): pretty good.

No dark Elves (oh well). Something to create at some time.

At £2.72/£3.71 it's pretty good (and needed to complete the collection).

Swords and Savagery Expansion Pack 1
by Stephen Y. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/29/2016 05:44:09

At 8 pages, 7 are the content. It contains a collection of rule additions, clarifications and optional rules; and a new class (Elf Scout), which is susceptible to chaos. Artwork: 1 piece, seen in another pdf of the game. There's an action tabe & encumbrance table as well. A pretty good addition to clarify and add to the rules.

66 pence/90 cents, worth getting to complete the rulebook.

Swords and Savagery
by Stephen Y. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/29/2016 05:35:09

At 30 pages, 29 are the content.

Dice needed: D4, D6, D8, D10, D12.

The abilities are: Might, Mind, Body, Spirit, Inititative, Movement. You roll 1d6 for each of the 6 abilities above (there are also ability modifiers as well). Your class will will also supply modifiers. Then you choose your skills and Body points.

Combat: 1d6 plus Initiative modifier. After you've determined your Proficiency, Ability, Action Level, Difficulty Level, and then determine success. Success points: Subtract Target Number from dice roll equals number of success points. For most actions, you either succeed or fail. Although, sometimes the GM might want to know how well the player succeeds, and usues the success points to determine how well the result was, and describes it to the player.

Artwork: B&W, same style as Ogres & Underworlds (some artwork is the same). Some typos. One was p14: arrows: 10Gp & bolts: 15Gp. It gives the cost, but not the quantity you get.

At £2.72/$3.71, it's fairly good; but worth getting the Monsters book, and the Expansion 1 book as well to 'complete' it.

Universal Adventures Treasure Pack II
by alexander m. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/20/2016 15:47:37

Adds nothing but wasted time to a task that was done far better than this in every edition of dnd ever published.

This boils down to thumbing to the first treasure table in your own RPG, using a card pull that has very little usable entropy compared to using the usual dice, and then finishing the rest of the now-stunted treasure generation procedure as you would have without the cards.

These cards don't add variety to your game; they nearly zero it out; even if the product had as much diversity as the roll it's replacing, you go through cart->purchase->download->print->cut just to remove a single roll of a d100.

contents breakdown: 1 page cover, 1 page about the rocket-science that is printers, cards and scissors (and plugging author's other products) 1 page with 9 randomly rolled up treasures, dominated by trite and trivial results that require you to then roll on your own RPG's tables to actually flesh out. 1 page of "card backs". (no art, just the word "treasure".) 1 page of ads for author's products.

example: pulling card 8 says roll 1d6, with results ranging from "Two 2nd level cleric spell" to "One 3rd level magic spells." (sic)

constructive criticism for the author: Focus on creating truely unique results that couldn't be reproduced by 30 seconds of time in a DMG or 5 seconds on a generator website, with hooks, quirks, and flavor on every card, or go the other way and write a generator with a novel card combos or trading gimmick.

Nice sample of the game. Unfortunately, it's not enough to really play a game. Still, it gives a good idea of what the game is about.

Universal Adventures Dungeon Deck
by Jeffrey C G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/24/2015 23:45:32

Pretty good set! Just what I needed and generic enough that they work fine with my homebrew system. My only complaint remains that they are a little pricey, but that's much less a factor in this set than some of the others due to the nice little geomorphs on each map card, so nowhere near enough to reduce my rating! I have now purchased most of these generic decks and use them in my games.

This deck was just right for what I was looking for- some options with most of the cards and generic enough to work in my homebrew system. I am enjoying this entire line of card decks. They are a hair pricey for what they are but I still bought them, so I suppose they can't be too far off!

I got this set of cards to explore how I might integrate these or similar cards into my ongoing campaign. Clearly shows the many options available and links to complete sets of cards. Good job for an intro to this method of gaming.

Ogres and Underworlds Monster Sample Pack
by Warren H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/09/2014 23:53:09

Description A 2 page PDF consisting of a cover and a page describing a monster for Ogres and Underworlds.

Why should I look at this? If you are trying to decide on whether to purchase Ogres and Underworlds this PDF has a 4th level monster in it you can compare to Quillar the elf from the Character sample. It is only an entry from the Monsterous Encounters product so you can see what the GM has to track during a combat and that the system will easily allow every monster to be different as it is a skill based system and the monster use skills as well. Unlike other systems monsters are not full blown characters so take less to create and handle. As a teaser product it is effective and meets everything promised in the blurb.

Ogres and Underworlds Character Sample Pack
by Warren H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/09/2014 23:37:43

Description A 3 page PDF consisting of a cover and 2 pages of content. The content is some promo text for Ogres and Underworlds RPG, design notes and a sample character.

Why should I look at this? The design notes tell you what the designer had in mind when writing his own game and why he decided to write it in the first place. This can help you decide if the game is one you might want to play. The sample character has a short back story and a completed character card. There are a few paragraphs generally talking about what is on the card and possibilities for the future but not enough to get a feel for the rules beyond knowing the game has levels; skills and special abilities. If you are thinking you want to try a new game this will give you a feel for the tone of Ogres and Underworlds and a feel for what the designer had in mind. It isn't a quick start and doesn't try to be it is just a sample character and a 30,000 foot view of a game so you can decide if you want to look any further as such it serves it's purpose and meets everything the blurb claims.
