Fast and fun! 1hour well spent! Read the directions carefully so the dungeon coordinates dont mess you up.

Brimstone - Abandoned RPG System
by Stephen Y. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/11/2016 07:52:13

At 71 pages, 68 are the content.

Artwork: Very good, quite evocative. I hope they keep to it.

The only error I coudl find, was an axe overlaid one some text (top left) on page 19. The characters have the standard STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA.

No character sheet (but that shouldn't pose a problem), any OSR sheet should suffice.

It's nicely laid out. And since it's free, you'd be daft not to get it.

Very much worth a look.

Brimstone - Abandoned RPG System

This is an unofficial highly-simplified rendition of Dungeons & Dragons, closest to 5th ed (imho). Noteworthy is that classes are abstracted by merging class features and feats into a broad pool, and by drastically reducing number of skills. I'm looking to playtest this at some point in the near future.

Scoring and reviewing a product in beta can be problematic- after all it is unfinished. So bearing that in mind I gave this a 5 for a free offering of an unfinished rulebook. I have seen dozens of D&D retro clones coming out recently, what stood out for me in this one was the elimination of the class system with its replacement being a fairly straightforward feat and skill system. I like- it offers more flexibility and less rules while retaining the old school play style- because you can still make a character who is like a traditional cleric or magic user, or one who is like a multi-classed AD&D character- within the same simple rules set. I'd buy that for a dollar- except it is totally free! And by the way, the interior black and white art is fantastic- totally evokes the feel of the old basic set and the pictures I would stare at for hours as a kid, wondering what the back story was. I hope they stick with this art style in future revisions.

I also liked the rules for hirelings and retainers, simple and elegant. This is the most notable OSR rules set I have seen recently, I think I may even like it more than DCC and LL...

Thank you for the kind words, Simon! The game has a way to go yet before being finished, but it is comforting to know it seems to be on the right track.

The game was a lot of fun to play and only had a hand full of hiccups. My kids are ready to play again, and 6.95 to have fun with your kids is always a good investment.

Thanks, Patrick! If you have any suggestions about \"hiccups\" feel free to let me know. Gotta keep things in mind for the 2nd edition!

At £2.11, this is actually quite good. The PDF is 44 pages long (42 are the actual content). The system reminds me of 2 RPG systems: WEG D6 and BESM Tri-Stat). WEG similarity: abilities are D6 based, for example one might be 3D (3D6), while another could be 2D (2D6). As for the Tri-Stat similarity, the 3 abilities/attributes are Body, Mind and Skill (BESM: Body, Mind, Spirit). You choose one at 3D, another at 2D, and the last one at 1D.

The attributes/abilities can be upgraded with gold (P23): 100Gp to increase an ability by 1D (max 3D). It states on the last page it's for 9+ years, which seems about right.

I'll try it out on some of the younger members of the family, see how they get along with it. It's good to see RPGs like this for younger RPG players (there's also the JEN Games one as well).

I'd give this 4.5/5, a good introduction to young RPG players.
