D20 to Yuma
by Boris [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/09/2024 22:04:32

Game was recommended by a friend, so I picked it up. Game looked interesting, and we put together a group and even figured out how to make a makeshift character sheet on roll20. We love the mix of genres, which tags all of our group members' interests. But the PDF is not searchable, and this is a huge problem. It would be so simple to make it searchable. Why is it not searchable? Review would be 5 stars if PDF was searchable.

okay not going to beat around the bush with this review. This was made in the late 80's based on a comic by the same name. It was a popular comic for furry fans and when this came out it was around AD&D release date. this style of rpg was still building. I can't say infancy, but deffently terrible twos. They were moving from war games to theater of the mind. That means like earlier AD&D it is chart heavy. look at everything with charts. This is were the math nerd stereo type if the fandom comes from. want to do something look at the chart and subtract the opposite value and learn what part of the chart to use. Want to do damage subtract bullet penetration and his armor. then roll on the correct chart. If you grew up with this style game then great you know what to do and this will be a good blast from the past. If your new to rpg and want to read how older ones were like it is a fun few dollar read. If you just like the world of the comic the makers of Ironclaw another furry RPG might be better for you to jump in. That is not saying this is unplayable it is just a bit of a time sink to find all the charts and run all the numbers.

The art is mostly from the comic and is good for and 80's printing. Nothing to write home about but usable. Only thing I didn't like and this will not be a problem with 99.99999% of you is I am visually impaired and I also have an ld in reading. I love getting pdfs of rpgs so I can have my phone read it and I read along with it. Only problem is this rpg is only recognized as an image, so the reader didn't work. Most people will not find this a problem, but it was a pain for me.

(Apologies for the delay in writing this review)

By Gygax-Thar's Hammer, I LOVE this book! Trek-Fi fan? Check. Scott Ruggels fan from TFOS? Also check. Excellent, funny, GSP-sin-free writing fan? Also also check.

If the above describes you, even a little, you should buy this book! I bought the S&S rules some time back, but held off on this work awhile before picking it up...and I regret having waited. Sometimes, I will just revisit this document for the pure enjoyment of it- the layout is easily-navigable, the easter eggs grin-inducing, and all the artwork is excellent!

To echo another's words here- PLEASE favor us with further content like this! Five stars!

I picked this and the Starship & Spacemen 2e book and I have to say WOW, this book blew me out an airlock with how good it is! The whole adventure just screams Original/Animated Trek and just oozes with flavor. A new area of space to explore, new aliens to meet, classic foes to face, beaureucrats politicking, bar fights and more away missions than you can shake a phaser at! The whole adventure should take a brand new party of Confederation members who are green and wet behind the ears and turn them into hardened explorers of Space Fleet.

If you're a lover of classic Sci-Fi with all it's cheesy goodness then put on your red shirt, ready your phaser and take off with this grand book!

D20 to Yuma - Trouble at Mission Wells
by John B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/10/2020 23:12:46

Another great entry in the D20 to Yuma universe, this time expanding upon a specific part of the game world (Mission Wells), offering a sandbox area with loads of content GMs can run with. Artwork is still amazing and the underlying conflicts in town give plenty of potential campaign plots for players to follow. A helpful accessory to the main D20 to Yuma sourcebook!

A very fun read and well worth the price! I loved the fantasy western setting it described, along with the fantastic artwork that's both cute and action-packed. There's a very homey feel to the game's structure, with a setting and ruleset that's very friendly to homebrews and roleplaying. Can't wait to read the next one!

D20 to Yuma
by Morrigan B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/14/2018 16:24:41

Perhaps as appropriate for the genre, this book contains a mixture of things good, bad and ugly. Although simple and fun - it lacked the overall professionalism I would expect from a published book of the price.

The Good

The mechanics are a strong point here with few exceptions. They are written in a clear, newbie friendly fashion. More importantly for me however, they ditch traditions when it suits the genre.

This is a classless system - and one of the most streamlined and flavorful interpretations I have personally seen. Overall it is very function out of the box with no homebrew required.

The Bad

My mostly female group rolled their eyes in unison upon realizing this game has sexually dimorphic attributes. Female characters are supposed to get -1 STR, but +1 to either DEX or CHA. While we don't normally mind if a specific species or race has something like this - having it as a universal rule for characters of all races just seemed awkward - particualrly since it came immediately after an explanation of women being equal to men in the setting.

This book desperately needed an editor. One particualrly glaring example was in the description of Coyote Folk, in which a paragraph ends with a sentance obviously cut off in the middle "Coyote Folk are renowned"

The Ugly

While the western genre has never been culturally sensitive - either in fiction or the real history - referring to native americans as "Savage" is a serious faux-pas.

Combined with depictions of buxom native women with feathers in their hair and pocahontas style tunic, and the listed price for the scalp of hostile natives - the overall impression is barely above an elementary schoolboy's imagination of "Cowboys & Indians"

Final Thoughts This is a book which easily has potential to be a 5 Star product with a few improvements. One of the most obvious - hiring an actual Editor and perhaps someone with more experience in page layout.

I recognize that "Mostly female group heavily involved in or belonging to the local native community." is probably not the demographic ever imagined by the author - but this book is certainly awkward to show to my group.

This is really good stuff. The art is evocative and well done. The writing is clear, and there is enough material here for years of play. I would probably use this as is with little or no modifications. The author added my beloved Andorians, sorry! Entirrans... The space combat rules have been tweaked to reflect FASA's ST's 1st edition. Although, one minor complaint... My 2nd favorite race is missing! Where are the Tellarites?

Anyone who's purchased the awesome Spaceships & Spacemen 2e should buy this.

These are color versions of the black and white player star maps found in the Lucanii Drft product a color version of the sector mpas layout is also given.

If you have the Lucanii Drift product you want this as the color maps look much nicer than the black and white ones.

This is a very good product. The art is clear, the descriptions really bring you into the setting, it's a relatively easy read and really expands the S&S game. It seems the Starships and Spacemen RPG has been waiting ages for a supplement just like this and now it has one. Well done Paul Kidd

This is a excellent campaign sourcebook for 2nd edition Starships and Spacemen.

It is available in both PDF & print forms. The players maps in it are also available as separate free PDF product, so I recommend you grab both.

I'm reviewing my PDF copy.

The PDF is 186 pages, including, cover.

First this PDF has some fantastic art.

One minor disappointment is that some of the art did have a color version, but the interior art is all black & white. (The shuttle craft art on the dedication page for example was originally in color.) I wouldn’t mind seeing an additional PDF download of the book with the art that was made in color in the PDF in color.

The book starts off with a brief intro to the campaign and then moves on to some very usefull stuff. Next up are 3 new Confederacy player races.

The Felicians are a cat like races and were heavily inspired from Ciaitians from Star Trek, that is in several of the animated series episodes and also seen in latter Trek films.

The Entirrans are based on Star Trek Andorians. A new psi power is found in a side bar in the decription of this race

The Pleiadiansns are based on Star Trek Orions. Some GMs who have using the Grillii from White Dwarf 11, who as the main merchant race may not want to use them or have them as a 2nd major merchant power.

New Rules are next.

These are well thought out and ad a lot to make the game more Star Trekish.

The Alternate Starship Combat System. Makes combat a little more like the old FASA Star Trek RPG and each major ship officer now has a part to pay in combat.

Some rules to do bar room brawls are given to conclude this section. I was thinking of the original Star Trek episode “Trouble With Tribbles”,and the bar fight scene from it, when reading this part.

Some new equipment is next. All useful and good stuff.

The Lucanii Drift is described next and is full of lots of adventure potential.

Some highlights of this section are: The Confederacy Starbase Keppler has a mix of Deep Space 9, Babylon 5, Stargate: Atlantis feel to it and you can just run station based games with the info given. Major NPCs, adventure ideas, etc. are given,

Details on the Zangrid presence and major Zangrid NPCs.

The Caelieran a new alien race that is native to the Drift. They are detail , along with their ships, etc.

The planetary & space exploration, and details on major worlds, maps, are given. Detailed adventure seeds are found in this part.

The book concludes with details on the CFS Kellerman and optional rules to have the characters ship get upgraded, via equipment and/or better crew performance when characters go up in level instead of assigning them to a larger ship.

Some pages have blank character space so the GM can work up the crew details for the ship and write them in. A sample NPC first officer is given, that can be used as PC.

A lot of the information in this book can be easily used in other S&S campaigns.

I highly recommend this book.

GeneStorm: A Post-Apocalyptic Role Playing Game
by A customer [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/30/2016 13:48:52

This post-apocalyptic game is one of the scions of Gamma World. The author wrote one of the GW novels that came out with the 7th edition of that game. Genestorm is an adaptation of that setting, and a pretty good game to boot. It is without a doubt on the gonzo side of the PA settings, including plant/animal hybrids as both creatures to interact with and player characters. The ruleset uses d6s and seems fairly rules medium (skill based, no classes). But that isn't why I bought it. I got it for the setting.

The world is very much what one would expect from a GW scion- weird technology, stranger mutants and outright bizarre locations. For the last, there are even tears in space that lead to other universes that will destroy the body and mind over time. Tech is mostly of the jury-rigged sort with the occasional artifact of the ancients for the characters to play with. And as for mutation, there isn't that many, though they are designed to be easily reskinned to allow for a wide diversity of appearances and effects. Genestorm also has no mental mutations of any sort, only physical. Humans can be non-mutants or mutants. And then there are those that are entirely or primarily animals and those that are entirely or primarily plants. There is so much gene mixing (see below for why) that animals such as nudibranches (sea slugs) and armidillos are mentioned as potential parental species.

The described setting isn't terribly flavorful- that is what the supplement is for. For something that is meant to be the opposite of grimdark, it does have one thing that is gruesome- cash comes in the form of ID chips that were implanted in the people before the cataclysm. That means the player characters can get rich by tearing apart old bodies they find in ancient ruins. There are also suggestions on how to make money by stripping broken tech for parts and chemicals. There is an adventure, a mystery that has the PCs searching for a pile of treasure that was hidden by a prospector. I don't want to give anything away, so other than missing maps (which aren't that important anyways), it well written in my opinion.

The best chapter is that one creatures. The setting posits a virus that escaped and merged the genetics of all the non-microbial species it encountered. It is called Chop Shop and it is an obvious homage to Mix Master, the microbe that was making monsters in Tremors the Series (thumbs up for the reference, Mr. Kidd!) The example creatures comes in dangerous predators, useful critters and riding beasts that have stat blocks and a lot more that do not have stats as they are mostly harmless to the player characters. A very few examples- melon pigs are watermelon/hog hybrids useful for their meat and water content, lea-moos are plant/cow hybrids used as mounts and pack beasts, mega-moths are huge canine/moth hybrids that eat smaller creatures, skulks are rat/vulture hybrids that are a primary scavenger on the plains and be wary of those mentioning chomps or chompers. The former are massive worms (no snake tongues) that attack from below whereas chompers are large cat/mantid hybrids that are almost as massive as the moths.

The only negative about the book for me is the art. It is great, but the pieces are small (the examples on the indiegogo page are shrunken down in the book) and scattered in the book- except for a few full page works. With all the nifty critters, I was hoping for more art on them.

People who like furry games, gonzo post-apocalyptic settings and just something out there should get a kick out of Genestorm.
