e-Adventure Tiles: Encounters No. 1
by Christopher H. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 01/07/2011 10:08:31

This first installment in SKG's "Encounters" line includes three different encounter areas, all featuring the usual high-quality miniatures-scale cartography we've come to expect from Ed Bourelle. However, the three areas differ in usefulness. On the one hand, the swamp temple ruins (three 6x9 tiles, including a variant on the tile shown in the product description) raises a number of interesting story possibilities. The necromancer's throne room (six 6x6 tiles), on the other hand, has more evocative artwork than the swamp temple, but doesn't inspire me as much with story ideas. (That necromancer also definitely better have prepared passwall, or the DM needs to designate a secret door in the room. What self-respecting person or undead with a throne room in the first place enters and exits through the same central doorway as everyone else? The warded supply cache (one 6x9 tile) could be useful in a variety of situations, although it's a 6x9 dungeon tile, which might not always play well with the standard 6x6 dungeon tiles in other SKG products. As I said, a little bit of a mixed bag for me.

e-Adventure Tiles: Swamps
by Michael T. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 11/24/2010 14:42:10

Because I'm a bit of a completist, I get very frustrated if I'm not able to perfectly detail the terrain of a particular role-playing game scenario with tiles. I've long been fond of Ed Bourelle's products from SkeletonKey Games – he has a crispness to his cartography that is unrivalled. So when I needed a mat for my son's dinosaur play set, Ed's fabulous work was the first place I turned to.

Truth is, I didn't need to print out anything. I had, years before my son was born, printed out the tiles on high quality photo stock. I wisely saved them (the cost of printing these tiles will kill an entire print cartridge in one run) and when I needed a swampy foundation to place our prehistoric volcano, I just took it out and taped it together.

How complicated can a swamp be? Very, as it turns out, thanks to Ed's ingenious ability to mix and match tiles. Certain land masses match up with others such that you can create multiple connecting tiles of above-water or underwater terrain. The detail is crisp and the bright blues and greens really look attractive.

It's also a great place for swamp dinosaurs!

e-Adventure Tiles: Desert Boulder Fields
by Joe K. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 10/14/2010 17:25:15

Desert Boulder Fields, like perhaps every SkeletonKey Games PDF, includes an overview of the different tiles before going to the full page images. These preview and instruction details only take up two pages and the rest of the file, another twenty pages, are tiles of the sands and boulders. The thing I like about these tiles is that there are a few that allow for some quick use that isn't necessarily just a desert tile.

For example, DBF11-DBF14 could all be linked to showcase a desert encampment that the party can stumble upon. Because of the natureo f the tiles, if you want the party to run across a larger group, you can print more tiles. DBF16 and 17 can be used to represent a stone trench that the party can seek shelter from. It's a nice variety of material.

Even better news, the product is on sale; $4.00 instead of $7.99. A cheesey quote might end this by saying, you can't hide those savings in the desert.

Edventure Maps: Sewer Challenge
by Scott H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/11/2010 10:39:26

I own 15-20 of the tile sets and have been happy with them all. I use them with MapTool.

Unfortunately this set does not meet the standard set by the other e-tiles. I find that the e-tiles have a very nice look of having a grid without glaringly looking like a grid. This set does not. It does not match the other sewer tiles. There is also some sort of problem with the scale as explained on the intro page. The tiles are broken up in the middle of a grid at times.

This set is not suitable for a VTT without major graphics manipulation.

Given the price its, ok, just note it will not connect up to your other tiles very well.

e-Adventure Tiles: Crypt of Blood

Far less evocative than most sets, which I usually love. However, the bonus tile in the intro PDF is excellent.

e-Adventure Tiles: Encounters No. 1
by Joe K. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 10/04/2010 12:13:06

Encounters No. 1 is three seperate locations; Ncromancer's Throne Room, consisting of six tiles, Swamp Temple Ruins, consisting of three tiles, and a Warded Supply Cache, consisting of one tile. The file itself comes with a brief cover page discussing how to use the tiles (print and trim!), a single page preview of how the different tiles go together, and then the actual ten tiles themsves.

The tiles are very ink intensive but are heavy in details and have a lot of depth in color. These are not for the faint of heart in fear of printer use. The details are heavy, but not unique enough for my taste. For example, the Necromancer's Throne Room has a dead dragon on the left side of the room. Impressive in its detail and a cool feature for the floor. Then it's ruined by having what looks like an almost exact copy, if not an exact copy of the thing on the other side of the room. In addition, the borders are massively thick and waste a lot of ink not necessary for the purposes of printing.

Those two things are minor quibles though when dealing with the details and art found here. For example, the floors in the inner chamber of the necromancer's throne room also have green glowing ruins upon them as well as blood splatters. The throne itself is on a raised dias of carved bone. The details in terms of the different coloration of the tiles really comes through.

The only other thing I can think of that would add some utility to the maps, are layers to remove the title of the product and the title of the tile page. This would help save down on the ink consumption.

If you're looking for tiles that are ready to be used with other tiles in the Skeleton Games series or are self contained to start with, the e-Adventure Tiles looks like a good place to start.

e-Adventure Tiles: Ice Temple
by Michael M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/07/2010 18:08:08

With 4th Editions focus on battle tiles, having a good (e.g. easily printed) stock of tiles has become very important. The Ice Temple (with embedded ice dragon) really adds flavor to the existing stock of dirt/rock/cave dungeon floors. e-Adventure Tiles always provide the ability to mix and match to generate variety. This pack's challenge is that there is only one tile that is not either a corner or blocked by a column spot -- but that can be fixed with a felt pen or crayon or whatever you have to work with. For anyone trying a Northern glacier adventure or deep mountain freezer or just a chilling adventure, these tiles meet the need.

e-Adventure Tiles: Temple of the Sun
by RAISTLIN W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/19/2010 04:59:26

There aren't enough geomorphic tile sets of places characters would want to DEFEND as opposed to INVADE. This is especially unfortunate with miniatures games, where it's very likely that at least one player is "the bad guys." This may or may not rectify that depending on your campaign, but this is certainly a friendly-looking temple in general.

e-Adventure tile sets are a class act, and a staple around here for all kinds of miniatures gaming. This is a nice, cheap add-on to the excellent Sacred Temples set.

I did find assembling the tiles into a temple a little tricky. This is an add-on set for Sacred Temples, and neither set actually provides an example of a completed, sensible temple. Some trial and error is required, but once the tiles are printed and in hand you can puzzle through.

e-Adventure Tiles: Fungus Caves
by RAISTLIN W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/19/2010 04:54:32

The Fungus Cave is a bit of a specialized setting. I'm not sure I'd want to use too many of these tiles -- splashing a few into an ordinary cave is probably better than creating an entire fungus-filled cavern.

That said, as usual, e-Adventure tiles are a miniatures game staple around here, allowing for very rapid creation of intricate battlefields. They're pricey (well, not this set, but the others) but VERY worth it.

As noted, this set is a bit more specialized, but (1) it's free and (2) you know what you're getting from the cover, so if you don't have a use for this set in particular there are plenty of others to choose from.

e-Adventure Tiles: Volcanic Caves Vol. 1
by RAISTLIN W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/19/2010 04:46:30

What you see is what you get: gridded geomorphic tiles designed to create uncountable numbers of different volcanic cave complexes. These tiles fit together terrifically with other e-Adventure sets to produce larger and/or more varied boards.

These are a miniatures gaming mainstay at our place: instant battlefield, just alternate placing tiles till the table's full enough, pick an edge and rush in. They could also be used by a gamemaster to create and then lay out a cavern complex.

The price point is slightly high, but it's worth it.

e-Adventure Tiles: Adventure Town Inns Vol. 1
by Chip D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/01/2009 21:40:17

This set tries so hard and ultimately it comes up just a bit shy. This set can really only be used to create very heroic inns, not medieval inns in any fashion. These are large and soaring inns with grand entrances. If this is your style then this will suit your needs, but if you want to be able to create from town inns you will be disappointed - the sizing is only grand and better (the Ritz of fantasy inns).

a) Very few entrances

b) Windows everywhere

c) No blank cobblestone - again you have to purchase another set (row houses).

d) Seriously, Adobe has a layering function and it would have worked wonderfully to break up the blander tiles.

e-Adventure Tiles: Adventure Town - Row Houses Vol. 1
by Chip D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/01/2009 21:33:32

This is a very nice set and the best set that I have seen from Skeleton Games. I still wish they would make liberal use of PDF layers so that a single tile set can serve many different purposes (like removing carpets or other add-ons.

Out of all the SKG sets that I own this is the only one that I feel is worth the price.

e-Adventure Tiles: Adventure Town Taverns Vol. 1
by Chip D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/01/2009 21:30:53

Much better effort than their outdoor tiles - these look good in the PDF and on the table. Just a few problems that stopped this from being a 5-star set.

A) No stairs (up or down), ladder, or other method to reach any other levels. It would have been pretty easy to add a couple of tiles for these.

B) No small taverns. This tileset makes very large D&D style of taverns, but it would be very difficult to use them in a more realistic setting.

C) No all cobblestone tile. Sure you can get it in row houses, but it is a glaring omission for this set.

e-Adventure Tiles: Deciduous Wilderness
by Chip D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/01/2009 21:21:20

I am not sorry that I purchased them - given the price, but these could have been so much better (like all of the e-Adventure sets). I could pretty much put the same knocks unto most of the e-Adventure tiles.

1) They are not square. This is a very bit hit against these tiles. Because they are not square you cannot easily rotate them to change a setup. I cannot stress how important this knock is against the e-Adventure tiles. These tiles are 6x9 - so you can do 3x2 tiles rotated, but this makes mixing and matching a nightmare.

2) No layering. PDFs have a wonderful layering capability that give easy access to a larger number of tiles simply by turning on and off different layers. Sure, they accomplish the same thing by including a decent number of tiles, but it is not like this set contains that many tiles.

Set specific

A) Another flat and lifeless set (see Forest Paths). These artwork is quite simply dull and lacking in any imagination.
