I like the system a lot. It is simple streamlined and very easy to write content for. That said the presentation is aweful. The landscape format is awkward and genrally unweildy. Having the same in a two colomn format with 50% more pages and a normal page orientation would be inifintly better.

There is a nice system here I think, but the presentation leaves something to be desired and shows a lack of attention to detail. Mostly there are small quibbles such as:

  • The xp based advancement system stating that traits should have an XP cost if you use it but then neglecting to actually give any XP costs for the sample traits.
  • No rules given for starting equipment.
  • Equipment chapter gives a lot of rules but no examples of equipment builds that use thouse rules.
  • Runestones are a thing that exists, and there is a skill for creating them but no explanation of what they do.
  • Herbalism is likewise underdefined though not as badly we at least get an idea fo what herbal mixtures do.

All in all it feels like substantial chunk of the system never made it into the book and remains in the author's personal notes, or perhapse merely in his head.
Lastly the arrangement of information is somewhat poor, it works well enough to be read through but I can see it making it difficult to find things during play seeing as the Table of contents is rarether sparse and there is no index. If you want to find the list of sample traits for example you have to remember that its in the Core Mechanics Chapter. There are also a few other chapters which have useful tables scattered about them.

I would also have liked to see a skill list per attribute, though this is more of a personal opinion, as I think it replicates the source material well. In the source characters often put a lot more points into one attribute over the others due to the way skills are so linked.

Tunnels & Trolls v7.5

I have a very mixed feeling on this product. The system itself seems quite nice and simple. Granted it does have the potential issue of requring bucket fulls of dice. However the book leaves a lot to be desired.

For something that has gone through seven previous editions it just does not feel particularly polished. Things are just not laied out well, not explained clearly and occationaly contradicted.

Moreover the book is incomplete. For instance it never explains how much damage an unarmed human does, or how you go about aquring more Talents, or how you improve talents, or even if you can improve talents.

It is also not a game for begininger because it does very little to explain the process of actually running a game. In paricular there are insufficent of examples for Saving Rolls and how they are used, particularly in combat situations.

Dragon Brigade: The Affair of the Orb Adventure

A great variant of Cortex Plus Action Roleplaying. 8 Pages of rules, 4 pages of setting background, 16 pages dedicated to a rich character build system, and then a 40 page adventure.

About the only thing missing here are character advancement rules, but these are easy enough to extract from one of the other Cortex Plus action rulesets.

And at $5.00 you are not going to find a cheaper introduction to the Cortex Plus system, which is a lot of fun and makes for fast engaging games.

I hit the same issue as one of the other reviewers. the PDF has about 40 pages missing, 36 pages. Presumably this replicates the data on the separate character sheets. but its still kind of jarring. Also character sheets are presented as 2 page spreads, which is unfortunate.

Aether Sea • A World of Adventure for Fate Core

A clear concise and interesting setting to play in. The magic system give a very good illustration on how to adapt FAE to particular settings. While I'm yet to play it I can see this setting working very well.

One minor quibble about the blur on this site, there are no species creation rules. Indeed exploration and discovery of new exotic lifeforms is not a feature of this setting as written.

Planarch Codex: Dark Heart of the Dreamer

My first grip with this product was that it is laid out in two pages per sheet. Which I find very inconvenient. On the layout front I would add to this the illegible font used for the three major headings and the random approach to page numbering. In this book page numbers seem to crop up at random intervals. Probably more then half the pages don't have one.

Also this is not a settings book. There is no more then the skeleton of a setting here. What there is instead is a poorly organized set of new custom moves for Dungeon World. Note there is no index of moves or any other attempt to make this a useful reference of new moves.

Also absent are any substantial examples of the new moves being applied in play. And really there is so much in terms of new rules here that an example was warranted.

You do get a map with some interesting locations drawn in, but these go mostly unmentioned in the text, and certainly don't get any kind of writeup. Heck even the one Key NPC in the whole book is not adequately described. We get names and powers but no real back story or personality.

All in all Dark Heart of the Dreamer does not compare well to other supplements for Dungeon World. Especially considering that some of the others are distributed free and this one costs 1/2 as much as the core rules of the system.
