Famines mean hard times for all, rich and poor alike... and makes the job of night watchman at a grain store something other than a low-paid, low-risk snooze of a job... and tonight, my friends, that task falls to you!
Opening with a comprehensive backstory that lays out the rationale behind at least one major threat to the grain the characters are guarding, the adventure itself starts with them being hired and set to their task. Their boss, a low-life profiteer if ever I saw one, trusts his guards as little as he trusts anyone else, so even they don't get to go in the grain store but have to watch from outside.
The scene set, the long night begins... and whilst some of it is indeed the mindless tedium of guard duty, there is plenty and enough activity to keep the characters on their toes.
It's a neat little low-level adventure, suitable for a one-off game yet redolent with ideas that could spawn an entire campaign.... a famine is a potent driver for adventure and a chance for low-level characters to make a name for themselves.
