The Senate Game
Publisher: Howard David Ingham

A simple, bare-bones edularp, in which the players explore the dynamics of Roman politics by taking the roles of Roman Senators and Equites and debating a succession of crises affecting the Roman Republic. The example crises are seeded from history, but the expectation is that as in Rome, the politicians will soon become the crisis, as they struggle for power and domination.

The rules are simple and well focused, covering things like debate, war and murder. It looks like it'd achieve the goal of giving people a look at Roman politics from the inside. From a larp perspective, I think it'd produce a couple of hours of fun, and I'd consider playing it at a con if it was on offer.

An excellent short larp. Its got a simple premise, but a big emotional kick. And fundamentally it asks you: what do you care about, and what are you willing to do to save it?

The package is complete, with extensive information on game logistics and run-time guidance, as well as props and mission patches. There are editable versions of the character sheets for those who want to tweak it. The characters are all gender neutral, so it suits the demographics of any group.

The Arrival (A LARP Script)
Publisher: DCS

This larp is woefully incomplete. The GM advice is sketchy, the characters are extremely thin (and one is incomplete), and there are huge gaps and inconsistencies. The open premise - an auction - isn't really supported in the plots and there is no staging advice for it. The secret premise, which I can't explicitly discuss because of spoilers, is unlikely to lead to interesting drama and its central protagonist lacks key information required for their plan. While it is barely playable, I will not run this for my local larp community because it would be an embarassment. And as someone who actually paid for it, I feel ripped off.

A beautiful Arabian fantasy. It needs a bit of polish, but the game is sound and delivers in play. The characters are highly detailed and woven together in a network of romance, treachery and revenge which should keep people busy for the expected three hours. Pay attention to your set dressing and you will have a very memorable larp experience. Recommended.

The Black Hart of Camelot

I have played this game twice, once in Auckland (as Merlin) and once in Wellington (as Gawaine). It perfectly captures the key stories and themes of the Arthurian cycle and mixes them together in interesting ways, without dictating any outcomes. The mechanics are simple and effective, and promote a "360 degree illusion" style of play. I highly recommend it.
