Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland
Publisher: Super Savage Systems
by Katrina B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/02/2020 15:09:33

My favorite god in the book is Lord Randy, the god of power and combat. The abilities are amazingly flavorful and cool nods to iconic media like the Death Bringer's "It's Too Dangerous To Go Alone" ability or the "War Wizard's Devil's Crit" which allows you to max out spells if you roll three 6's on your dice pool. My favorite shout outs in the monsters were the Combat Amphibian and Drool-Aid Man.

I can spot some small parallels with 5e D&D, most obviously how warriors get an extra attack at 5th level and that spells go up to 9th level, but it doesn't distract from the game much. The system does heavily rely on random tables to resolve nat 20s and nat 1s which in my experience is very dangerous since there's a 5% chance each roll of having to roll on those tables which can be very deadly either to the PC or to their foe. I do however, really like that each class gets their own critical hit table that is flavored after their unique abilities, that's a nice touch. The classes only go up to level 10, which I actually prefer. I also really like that HP and gold costs tend towards lower numbers, a thing I wish more RPGs did. The rules reference sheet at the back is really smart and helpful.

My biggest complaints are visual things. The Burliness table on page 4 is organized strangely but I think that's just a formatting error. The maps on page 54 and 56 are also difficult to read for me and I imagine would be near impossible for someone who's red-green color blind (it'd also take a ton of ink to print on a typical home printer). When I brought both of these up to the publisher he said they'd look into the table and are planning on including a black and white map as well.

Overall, it's a solid, simple system that looks like it'd be pretty fun to run, especially for a one shot.

D100 Minor Magical Items

Most of these are a little silly and many are actually pretty powerful, to the point where I wouldn't really call them "minor", with some allowing the user to cast spells like Invisibility, Polymorph, and Wall of Ice, even if it's only for a max of 4 rounds.

I'm not currently playing any old school games but there are a few itesms like the Censer of Wisdom and Tome of Remembering that I'd considering including them in my 5e campaign as Uncommon or Rare rarity items.

Cybernetics Flavor

This has several fully fleshed out cybernetics your PCs can choose as they gain XP. It's not quite as useful for my Numenera game currently but it definately gave me some ideas for if I ever introduce my players to the Datasphere and my cyberpunk d&d game. Maybe I'll even throw a nano npc into the next big city they get to and offer them one or two of these abilities if they have enough XP for them.

Skinchangers: Open Beta Test
Publisher: Amagi Games

Full Review Here

You play as shapeshifters that have met powerful animals spirits (Bobcat, Crow, Fox, Owl, and Raccoon). They granted the PCs the power to transform into an animal, use supernatural abilities, and see the spiritual and supernatural world in exchange for the responsibility of hunting monsters, be they “vampires in suburbia, great beasts in the subways, or weekend getaways where the owners prey on their guests”. Additionally, being part of the supernatural world detaches you from the rest of humanity. Most normal folks forget supernatural events incredibly fast, including the PCs if they meddle too much into magic.

Rules: Similar to Fate Accelerated, each character has approaches (though Skinchangers uses 5 different approaches vs Fate’s 6): Brutal, Covert, Fleet, Showy, and Studious the array being (4, 3, 2, 2, 1). Every time a PC attempts an action they choose what approach seems to fit best and rolls dice based on their rating.

However, one twist is the concept of Stakes, Dangers, and Augments. Automatic stakes are something that happens as a result of the PC’s actions that can’t be removed. Dangers are bad things that happen on a roll unless the player spends a (-) Fate die to cancel it. These might include Delay, Injury, Mayhem, Expense, or Fatigue. Augments are something that won’t happen as a result of the action unless the player spends a (+) Fate die to make it happen. Possible Augments include Observation, Speed, Style, Subtlety, Advantage, or Duration.

Overall, I'm really into this and can't wait to play it!

Retroverse Free Preview 2018
Publisher: Lasers & Liches
by Katrina B. [Verified Purchaser]

Overall: The Holo-Knight class has some flaws but is a very flavorful and interesting class and VERY differnent from your generic 5e fighter/ paladin/ eldritch knight. I'm interested and can't wait to check out the kickstarter.

Some abilities seem a little strong (Double Team mostly) and a few seem a little weaksauce to me (Weapon Shatter, Armor Burst) but overall pretty good.

The Dragonborn variants are interesting and fun, and the new spells are a little silly but still fun and interesteing. The monsters (and shiny variant templates) are unique and really cool looking. I like the blending of classic D&D mons into something new.

Really interested to see the whole thing! Full review here.

AFTERLIVES: or All Good Characters Go To Heaven
Publisher: Magnum Opus Press
by Katrina B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/12/2018 10:58:56

Afterlives is a diceless system that can seamlessly stack atop pretty much any game where PCs worship deities or god-like beings.

It's designed for when PCs die and you want something more dramatic and meanignful than "make a new PC and divide up dead PC's gear" or "I cast Raise Dead". It's designed such that the normal DM opperates as the Persecutor and a guest player acts as the Judge.

It doesn't offer any true game mechanics but does give a pretty solid, easy-to-follow outline for how to build a case for a PC's eternal soul. Overall, a great read and def something I'll consider using when I next find myself with a deceased PC.

Revenge Of The Turkeys!
Publisher: Dreadvector
by Katrina B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/07/2018 10:26:41

A very simple, silly game played with 1d6 where the PCs are turkeys fighting back against mankind/ farmers/ processing plant employees. Each Turkey PC rolls a d6 to determine if they're for or against party unity. Missions include: attacking polititians coming to "pardon" turkeys, freeing farm turkeys, and getting revenge on processing plant.

Overall a rediculous, probably very short game and looks like a lot of fun. Can't wait to break this out in November.
