Book of Sires
Publisher: Chaosium
by Brian B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/28/2021 11:23:20

Hands down, this is one of the greatest rpg books that I have ever purchased. I could only wish they would make an update or addition with the North. But this is absolutely fantastic. I love this book and open it almost weekly to reference it. This is the kind of quality that I have come to expect from Pendragon, it does not disappoint. Really, so much went into this book and it shows. I've never seen a better resource for character creation. So useful. I regular recommend it on the Facebook group. OH! Just one thing that I wanted to add. If you were interested in playing a later phase character, you could use the 4th edition Pendragon (my introduction to Pendragon!) family history to supplement this book.

Template: Energy Infused (Super-Powered by M&M)
Publisher: LPJ Design
by Brian B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/07/2020 10:18:37

This is the first of the templates from LPJ Design that I have purchased. I'm very pleased with the quality/value.

Several years ago, I was actually in communication with Image Comics over a character that I wanted to write and they were interested in publishing. Due to other circumstances, it never went forward, but I still think about that character. We're about to start a M&M 3rd edition campaign and this template looked like a good match for creating my character in game terms.

The PDF opens with a nice section reasoning through the origin story for such a character. There are some good ideas here, worth at least considering when building your character.

I will say that the headers between sections, sometimes the font size & outlines around fonts makes them a bit difficult to read. If you are reading it full screen, it's not so bad, but if you are on a smaller screen or not maximized, it can be difficult to read - not a major problem, but perhaps something to consider from a design perspective in future revisions.

This section is followed by considerations for complications. Again, some good ideas here. If I may allude to one of these, what happens of the Energy-Infused hero encounters a villain who can manipulate that form of energy? Good stuff.

The next section gives three options for creating the character. One of these includes three stat examples of how this origin could be added to an existing character. A sample origin story is then given, along with full game stats for the character.

All in all, this was certainly an enjoyable read. There were several very good ideas given - they prompted several trains of thought for me that I look forward to exploring with the character.

If you are interested in creating an Energy Infused type character, I definitely recommend purchasing the PDF and reflecting on the ideas given. Also, if you are GMing a game that includes an Energy Infused PC or NPC, I also recommend you take a look at the PDF. You'll get several ideas worth considering for your campaign.

Mythic World of Oldskull - Oldskull Knights
Publisher: Kent David Kelly
by Brian B. [Verified Purchaser]

I don't think anyone else can claim to give you as much bang for your buck as Kent David Kelly. I've bought so many of his books and they are always packed on every page with good stuff. Just as a blanket statement - I highly recommend his resources.

Specifically to this product, I'm very glad he chose to feature the knightly classes. I'm very drawn to the knightly classes, but don't always want to play a Paladin. This resource brings back all the great features of the cavalier class and expands on it. I'm a big fan of the Matter of Britan - Arthurian literature. But, even though the paladin class and the Knights of the Round Table tend to be associated in our minds, very few were actually paladins. Only Lancelot and Galahad (and perhaps Arthur in some tellings) demonstrated the class features of the paladin. 98% of the Knights of the Round Table were likely cavaliers as presented in this book.

There are very good sections on the Cavalier's weapons and armor and how this class will both limit those choices and enhance those choices.

Chivalric virtues is a great section and calls to mind the Trait system of the King Arthur Pendragon RPG (Chaosium).

Hierarchy of conflict is a great table for determining who your Cavalier will naturally single out for combat.

I really like the level of detail for the warhorses - knowing more about the breeds & the likelihood of each breed willingly entering combat.

CASTLE OLDSKULL - Oldskull Dungeon Tools
Publisher: Kent David Kelly
by Brian B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/30/2018 09:02:34

I just wanted to say that I was thrilled to find this item. I have almost all of Mr Kelly's Castle Oldskull books and truly treasure them. I was considering creating an XLS just like this to save time. I think being able to generate a few ideas on the fly and then be able to decide which go together best would be a great way to find solid material quickly. So I am very glad that Mr Kelly has taken the time to do this himself. Thank you, Mr Kelly for the Oldskull books. I really do enjoy them and look forward to each one as they are released. You've saved me much time and many headaches!

Conan the Barbarian
Publisher: Modiphius
by Brian B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/08/2017 11:07:12

This is the book that I have been eagerly awaiting since the release of 2d20 CONAN, and it does not disappoint. There are several new options for character creation which will help you achieve the Northern flavor for your PCs and NPCs. Also there is much more information here for Nordheim and Hyperborea than was previously published through Mongoose. While there is very good information for Cimmeria as well, I did not mention it in the comparison as Mongoose did have a dedicated sourcebook for that kingdom. I was very pleased to see some direction given for generating Nordheim villages and even nomadic villages for the far north. My review is rather Nordheim heavy as that was my chief interest in the book. The quality output from Modiphius continues to be outstanding. Someday I hope to have a dedicated shelf for all of these volumes in print.

The Adventures of Frank Frazetta's Death Dealer: Shadows of Mirahan
Publisher: Goodman Games
by Brian B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/15/2010 07:44:37

For anyone who is a fan of Frazetta's art, low magic, dark fantasy, or Molly Hatchet, this is a must-buy. Classic sword and sorcery. Goodman Games has done a very good job of translating the six-issue mini-series from Image Comics into a 4th-edition adventure. No, you don't get to play the Death Dealer, but you do play the adventurers who ultimately allow him to enter the world. As I read through the adventure, I wondered if I could tell my group we were playing a one-shot adventure, and not let them find out what we were playing. To have them arrive at the climax and "discover" the horned helmet and axe would be very, very rewarding. As I said the adventure is very good, but I was also impressed by the six appendices. The first is on character creation - the races of Iparsia. If you're like me, and enjoy human campaigns, this will give you five human race options. As a fan of vikings, I was very glad to see stats for playing Vikavians (from the Dark Kingdom comic series). Also, there are two feats to help balance the rules for a low-magic campaign. Again, this was something else I had been hoping to find for 4th edition. The second appendix is advanced rules to really flavor your game. Action points, critical hits, and milestones are all tweaked for classic, brutal sword-and-sorcery. This is why I think this is a must-buy if you like low-magic campaigns. I will probably be using the 1st and 2nd appendices from now on. Appendix 3 is your mini monster manual for the adventure. Appendix 4 is a handy XP tracker. After reading through the adventure, I can see why this would be very, very helpful. Appendix 5 are pre-gens. Appendix 6 is... drumroll... stats for the Death Dealer and his Black Charger. And now you know why you could not play him nor would you want to encounter him. It would be short-lived.
