Sandbox Meets Hexcrawl Meets Epic Storyline (Table & VTT Friendly)

Every millennium, a terrible evil trapped in the heart of the Luna Valley awakens to wipe civilization out — and the last awakening happened 1,000 years ago....

This time, if the heroes don't stop the evil, more than just the Luna Valley will die.

Welcome to The Demonplague, a rocking campaign that will take your players on a wild adventure rife with intrigue, secrets, and grim sword and sorcery action.

With equal parts classic adventure, sandbox, hexcrawl, and old-fashioned dungeon crawl, The Demonplague lets you GM with little prep and at the same time offers your players total freedom and choice.

Designed For Game Masters

New GMs benefit from a classic linear structure that gradually leads them into the campaign's other styles.

The Demonplague adventure comes in four parts, all of which you will get today for a complete campaign experience.

  • Part III: Icefall
  • Part IV: Xancrown's Prison

  • 27 new NPCs with complete write-ups for excellent roleplay

The Story

  • A classic linear adventure core story arc with village intrigue, wilderness exploration, and dungeon mission play
  • A sandbox stage when PCs are tough enough to brave the post-apocalyptic wilderness, letting them choose when and how to engage in story milestones
  • A hexcrawl portion where you can dynamically generate the contents of any hex, letting players roam freely throughout the valley and make amazing discoveries
  • A mega-dungeon finale with an exciting balance of roleplaying and action
  • A player-driven narrative that puts tough choices in front of their characters to determine the direction and outcome of adventures.

Bonuses

The Demonplague campaign comes with a hoard of extras to help you run an amazing campaign.

  2. Jelinghi's Gallery of NPCs. Awesome handouts for your players. Every NPC portrait, each on their own full page. Print-friendly black and white. Hand out to players as they meet these important people in your campaign.
  3. Jelinghi's Gallery of Foes. Another PDF with lush, full-page illustrations of all the new monsters created just for The Demonplague. Print them out to show your players.
  4. Side Trek: Sweetwater Village. Extra material for your sandbox Demonplague campaign. A great 18 page PDF adventure that provides new NPCs, monsters, maps and items.
  5. Side Trek: City of Safeharbour. Wiped out by the deluge, survivors eke out a living by exploring the ruins, which hold many dangers and surprises. Ambitious PCs might even want to tackle the undead kraken that now meances the harbour.
  6. Side Trek: Comet Dungeon. The astral object which caused the catastrophe is now a demon-filled dungeon your players can now discover and explore!
  7. Single Column PDF: All four core adventure in one PDF made single column with larger font size for easy phone and tablet reading.
  8. Jelinghi's Library of Maps: A PDF with every map of the campaign for easy printing, drawing on, and reference.
  9. VTT Maps: All our maps come in layered PDFs so you can configure exactly how you want your VTT maps to look. Need a player-safe version with furnishing but no grid? Or a GM version with grid but no room numbers? All elements are on different layers so you can export the exact configuration you need for onscreen use.

Have a question, in regards to the plague and it being spread and cured, how you would handle it regarding paladins being immune to diseases? I know I am free to run it as I please, I am just curious what your thoughts are on the matter.

Hola Lance! Great question. In my playtest, I let the paladin use their abilities as per normal. It helped avoid a TPK in one instance as multiple saaves were failed. It also gave the pally many fantastic spotlight moments. I didn't find the character unbalanced the campaign at all, as I could spread the plague as background events, and infect more people thsan the pally could heal. Plus, the pally could only be in one place at a time.

I was hoping the pally would join the Knights faction, as the Knights could have had a huge impact on the spread of the disease. I had actually cooked up a side plot where the Knights could restore themselves to paladinhood via player quests. Then the order could help protect Tomar's Crossing as the campaign intensity increased and the characters could no longer always be available to help as they ranged further afield. Alas, gameplay went in a different direction.

If I wanted to print the maps in 1" scale, how would I do that?

Hey Lance! You'll need to experiment. I believe you can change the % in your print dialogue to spread maps out to more area/pages, thus increasing hex size. Meantime, I'll reach out to the designer, Craig, to see if he has ideas. Cheers.

Hi guys. Just heard the review of this today (5 March 2020) on The Tome Show. Sounds great, and I’m interested in it.

As it’s not a WOTC product, have you thought about a KS or Patreon to reskin it for other systems?

I’m specifically thinking about FFG’s Genesys / Terrinoth setting. In addition to many years of 3.5 and 5e, our group has played the FFG Star Wars system. Would love to apply the Genesys narrative dice to a third party fantasy product. And I’m more than willing to pay through KS, Patreon or the Foundry (which also lives on DriveThruRPG), as I just don’t have the time to reskin it myself. Congrats on a great product and all the success it’s brought you!

I am a kickstarter backer running this campaign online over at Fantasy Grounds.
It is NOT optimized for VTT and its quite alot of extra prep work to run it. In future I hope they keep this in mind when creating a new adventure. Perhaps across a table or using the theater of the mind would work best, but for Fantasy Grounds monsters need stats so players and DMs can roll dice.
On the flip side the NPC backgrounds, Tomar's Crossing info and the descriptions of places such as Fort Frostfell are well written and my players have said more than once that they felt better immersed after hearing them.
Overall I would give this product 3.5 out of 5 stars because of all the extra work I have to do just to run it on a VTT platform. However the campaign CLEARLY stated it was only a PDF so perhaps my score is a little on the low side. If they made another campaign designed for VTT I would probably back it, but if its just a PDF I wouldn't.

Hi Don! Thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback. Could you elaborate a bit more on what would make the material more accessible for VTT?

Short of actually coding for Fantasy Grounds, Roll20, etc. what would be some quick things I could do to make the material easier for VTT use?

We've got all the maps available both as PNGs and as layered PDFs to configure how you like for PNG export. You mentioned monster stats. How could those be presented for easier VTT use?

I've still got all the raw materials, so maybe there's something I can whip up.

Thanks.

They have provided some very useful maps & tokens via drop box.
The stat blocks were also put into a FG mod file which was helpful.
It reduced my overall prep time from over an hour to about 30 minutes per session which was just what I needed.
There are still issues with the overall adventure, but my criticism is of all pre-gen material NOT this one in particular.
The personalities in Tomar's crossing alone are worth the cost of the package IMHO

Is this FG mod file available when you buy the item from DTRPG? I bought the adventure from the publisher directly and I don't see a mod file.

Thanks for responding Paul! I also missed your question Stephanie. My apologies. Paul's response triggered an email alert, and here I am only two months late. :)

There are no official VTT ports of Demonplague. There are maps and tokens, though.

A fan created a VTT file awhile ago and posted it to the Demonplague Facebook Group. I can't find it now, so I've posted a request to see if anyone can locate it.

Feel free to Join the group. lots of session reports and other things there!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
