An excellent source of new monsters, all uniquely suited for the games set in the modern era. The authors did a good job in providing far more than just statistics for the creatures, with detailed and interesting histories, motivations and ways to integrate them into your games.

This is a dark book so be warned. If that is what you came looking for you've found it. This book understands the cornerstones of dark horror from past horror fiction like Clike Barker and grasps the newer grue of Japanese horror. I hate to compare games but I do when I feel it is a compliment...This book conjures that creeping unease that Kult had from back in the day. Horror that does not negotiate, creatures that can't be killed with the silver bullet and fates worse than mere death. The monsters are very modern and original. This version uses the Gumshoe system for stats (but there is a d20 version available) making it used for Fear Itself but compatible with The Esoterrorists and Trail of Cthulhu. If you fiddled with it you could use it for a grittier profiler/psychokiller Mutant City Blues game but I imagine you would have to excise/alter the supernatural aspects. On that note you could adapt this book to other horror games to give them more of a backbone (or rip it out if you get the meaning). The writing is very good. Often as short stories or interviews that give a glimpse at the horror behind the black curtain. Art is also very well done and distinctly disturbing. I liked the layout of the book and found the information easy to access in play. Just under $15 you get your money's worth. Just remember this product is for a mature GM and presents a very dark unflinching take on horror roleplaying. But if you are tired of buying horror creature collections to just end up with topless succubi or uber kewl lycans then take the leap...just don't say you weren't warned.

A great resource for improving your game. Any genre of game.

How? By deconstructing the tropes of slasher and j-horror movie monsters, we get to see what makes the monsters work as characters. As such, they become more Real when played. Mystery Man makes for a very memorable yet enigmatic emissary of an alien culture or Man In Black, for example. The frame fiction also is inspirational for ideas on how to build a story hook for your characters (not necessarily directly as shown) - the idea of cameraphone video of "real" deaths being used as a staged music video worked wonderfully for getting my characters involved with a story that really put the characters out of their comfort zone... and thus made for an excellent horror game.

A horror source book for the modern day, this book provides some very unique and chilling creatures that are not only a refreshing step away from the standard werewolves and vampires, but also disturbingly detailed. (which is a good thing)

Graphically the book delivers with well inked black and white drawings of each creature mentioned, giving a good reference to go by. (Copy/paste is also enabled so you can copy desired creatures into pic files with ms paint or another program for easier use in your campaigns.)

Each horror is aptly described, with a short into story, detailed origins, and run down of what evidence investigators are likely to find at the since of an attack. Gumshoe stats are also provided along with a short description of the creature and any unique combat capabilities it may possess.

Over all this book is excellent for any contemporary horror campaign that needs a little touch of "never before encountered terrors" and can be easily adapted to other genres with a little work.

The only complaint I do have is text copying, while enabled is not functional, requiring you to rewrite any needed info from the book by hand instead of using copy/paste to add it into a word pad/note pad file when writing up adventures.

Art Quality: Very Satisfied Text Quality: Extremely Satisfied Value for Money: Very Satisfied Over all: The best $15 I've spent on a rpg supplement in the past 6 months.
