This is great for quickly scaling up a monster, especially if you wanted to run a solo fight and not get immediately killed by the action economy.

As other reviewers said, this is pretty bare bones, which makes it a great resource for if you want to make your mini-bosses a bit more challenging but want some of the logistics sorted out for you. If you don't have ideas for special attacks though, you aren't going to have a lot of use for this.

I've filed it away for my - if I need a resource for rules later but can't really put it straight into my game right now.

Bare bones but also the price is right. Never forget when your poor bosses get swarmed to start throwing around those legendary actions. ^^

The main consequence of using these rules will be that your boss monster gets to attack more often and can weather more hits. If that's what you're after, this supplement provides it in easy-to-read, easy-to-adapt language, complete with an example monster.

If you were looking for something closer to what's described in Matt Colville's Action-Oriented Monsters video, this ain't it. It really is just about giving the monster more attacks and hit points in a balanced way. If you want it to really feel like a dynamic boss fight, with options like manipulating minions, using the environment in a way similar to lair actions, etc., you need to come up with those ideas yourself.

To be fair, the PDF does encourage you to think up your own actions, but doesn't provide guidance for how many action points something like "giving all my goblin buddies 1 free attack" or "shake the ceiling so a bunch of rocks fall" would balance out to.

The star off is for how limited the use is: more hit points and more attacks for the monster in question. The star off is because there's so much more that could've been done.

With the combination of action economy and initiative in 5e, having monsters as a DM with Legendary Actions almost seems like a must once you hit Tier 2 of play unless of course you have a full squad or waves of minions as well. This free 3-page supplement does a great job of furthering that discussion and providing a handful of potential options as well as an example stat block to include in your next combat. Low CR monsters can still surprise your veteran players when you add this small piece of homebrew. Great job!

This is a genius idea for the DM that wants to throw a slightly tougher enemy at the players, but doesn't want to find/make a completely new statblock.

Super helpful, especially for newer DMs unsure where to start in modifying and beefing up their solo monsters.

Great addition for my game, I actually like the legendary actions mechanic very much and this product does a very good job of inserting it into my campaign. You should get it.

This is literally 2 pages of incredibly useful items that change your gameplay. It'll help you make the group of zorbos that fall out of a tree infintely scarier when one uses a legendary action to attack the assassin and destroy his armor. So much fun. Super easy to use.

(Not So) Legendary Actions is a certified DM's Guild Masterpiece by the Going Last Tabletop Gaming Podcast!

This is an incredible and absolutely necessary ruleset that has been posted by author Igor Moreno for free, and... are you still reading this? Go get this NOW.

We all want solo enemies to hold a threat over an entire party. It's a common enough media trope that we of course want to see that villanous last stand that causes the heroes to strive to the heroic maximum to succeed. Unfortunately, D&D isn't balanced with that specific moment in mind. A single enemy is either completely overwhelming with spells that the players can't handle or a complete pushover once they tear through its hit points.

Moreno took a cue from the Monster Manual's lich, which has Legendary Actions. These allow an enemy to act outside of their own turn, with limits on what they can do and how often then can do it. That turns a solo enemy into a reasonable fight! By scaling these ideas down, Moreno has created a means for even the weakest solo creature to become a meaningful threat.

You need this. This ruleset is smart and simple and every DM should use these to make their villains more of a threat during combat. And it's free? Free. If you haven't picked it up by now, I really don't know what else to say. It's that good.

You can hear more of my thoughts about (Not So) Legendary Actions on Episode 228 of Going Last!

This is a great DMing addition that functions perfectly for the CR 1-CR 5 creatures I've tested, and is still useful as a starting point for higher CR and lower CR creatures. I'd recommend picking this up just to expand your DMing repertoire for creating mini-bosses.

It's a great and easy way to create SBEGs (tm) or mini-bosses! I suggest redoing the HP increase into something non-linear that would maintain a steady CR increase, but brilliant idea!

I really enjoy using this! Monster "tiers" are something I miss from 4th edition, and while I try to implement them anyway, this has really helped.

I love this guide. It's a handy way to make encounters slightly more balanced towards your party. This guide makes the gap between Dragon Age categories much easier to manage. Young dragon too easy but an Adult is too strong? Well, just follow this handy guide to make a stronger Young Dragon that can still challenge your party!

It is a classic staple of mine now, and I have it printed out and in my DM binder so I can power up anything in the DMG at anytime I want.
